It’s been a little over a year since Naoto Hattori last showed in Los Angeles (covered), so it is about time for another go. REM will open on July 27th at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, with the title seemingly referring to that stage of sleep where dreams occur. This is certainly as good a title as any to describe the Japanese painter’s imagery, with surreal and psychedelic creatures, all rendered in super detail. It turns out a piece from the amazing sold out show (covered) from Kelsey Brookes at Quint Contemporary last year went to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (seen above in their recent acquisitions show). If you remember, the piece entitled Mescaline was part of his series of paintings inspired by the structures of psychedelics, no doubt drawing from personal experience as well as from his viewpoint as a former biochemist. Herbert Baglione – “1000 Shadows” Project (Italy)

It looks like Herbert Baglione has been having some fun in Parma, Italy recently. Hanging out in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, the renowned Brazilian street artist took advantage of the location to continue his 1000 Shadows project, a series of works where he paints floating silhouettes on floors and walls. Update: Saber

After his big exhibition in New York (covered), all has been quiet from SABER (interviewed) as of late – until several days ago. He shared some work that we have never seen exploring some new mediums for his American flag remixes like wood (Desert Flags) and encaustic. Openings: Momo in Grottaglie, Italy

Last weekeend in Grottaglie, Italy in the ceramic district, the geometrically inclined Momo opened up a solo show. Put on by the people behind the annual Fame Festival, the exhibition featured pieces that were very similar to the abstract murals that the street muralist has been known for. His use of color and the balanced composition bely a fine hand behind each work. Ryan McGinley – “Varuo” in Times Square

Times Square has been the stage for various projects form artists we have covered on AM in the past, not the least of these from Tracey Emin and JR. Now the high profile location has been playing nightly the Ryan McGinley video Varuo that we shared with earlier this year. In this year’s VICE photo issue (recently released), an interesting collaboration between Barry McGee and photographer Jim Goldberg was featured. The series of works entitled Interfearance features some of McGee’s patterned motifs that he is famous for, juxtaposed with Goldberg’s shots. Releases: Audrey Kawasaki x Pressure Printing – “Eien”

For those who missed Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) sold out print release from Pressure Printing five years ago, here is your chance at the companion print. Entitled Eien, which in Japanese translates to “forever,” “eternity,” or “permanence,” the new limited edition (run of 50) sized at  8 ¾” × 12 ¾” will cost you $1500 and comes in hand built walnut frames. The print, which is hand embellished by Audrey in pink pencil, will be available for sale at noon PDT on Tuesday, July 23rd 2013. Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Chet Zar – “Ego Death” Kickstarter

It sounds like  Chet Zar (interviewed) has big plans for his next show which will be entitled Ego Death. By setting up a kickstarter, the Los Angeles-based painter of monsters hopes to put on an exhibition like an elaborate funeral. Streets: Vhils (Philadelphia)

After updating you on Vhils’ activities in Hong Kong last month, we now have news for fans in the States as he recently completed a project in Philadelphia. Set between 13th and Juniper Street, the mural started with historic photographs of the city (from the Temple University Urban Archives) wheatpasted to the wall and then covered with a layer of white paper.
