Previews: Femke Hiemstra – “Fiebertraum” @ Merry Karnowsky

Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra will be opening a solo show this Saturday, June 22nd, at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. The new body of work, collectively entitled Fiebertraum or Fever Dream, draws inspiration from near and far like song birds that came to visit her garden during the colder months and the Indian Holi Phagwa festival. Videos: RETNA for MOCAtv

MOCAtv recently released a new video featuring the Los Angeles-based RETNA (featured) spanning several projects put together in conjunction with the museum. The footage includes an interview with the graffiti artist as he talked about his two recent murals, The Falcon Before and After – 2013 and Para Mi Gente, Los Pintores de Nuestra Alma, painted at the Grand Ave Location for their 2013 Gala. Jeff Koons – “New Paintings & Sculpture” @ Gagosian

Streets: Sam3 (Spain)

Sam3 has been busy recently along the Mediterranean coastline of Spain in Costa Blanca working on some murals featuring his signature shadow figures. Along with the stunning piece with political commentary that refers to expulsion of the Moors in the Ricote Valley in the sixteenth century, painted on a rock face (seen above), there was also the silhouette of a man in a boat with pretty sweet placement taking advantage of the natural elements of the wall (seen below). Releases: Jeff Soto – “The Blue Whale” for Pangeaseed

Available now is a new print from Jeff Soto (interviewed) to benefit Pangeaseed entitled The Blue Whale. As the sixth print released in their Sea of Change: The Year of Living Dangerously suite of prints, the proceeds will go to fund their 2014 Year of Living Dangerously art tour of Asia because that region is ground zero for the trade and consumption of many endangered species. Upcoming: Mark Dean Veca for “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

At the end of the month (June 30th), the Orange County Musuem of Art will be opening their 2013 California-Pacific Triennial. This survey of contemporary art draws from a cross-section of countries from throughout the Pacific Rim and will include a diverse list of artists this year including the locally-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed). With Basel Week Switzerland coming to an end, here is a look at the Thinkspace Gallery booth at the SCOPE art fair.
