Streets: Hush (Los Angeles)

Last we heard, Hush (interviewed) was in Melbourne for a solo showing in May of 2012 (covered). Fast forward a year and this time he will be opening an exhibition tomorrow night at the Corey Helford Gallery. While here, he just finished a mural at the Branded Arts Building featuring his East meets West urban aesthetic. Tomorrow night (May 18th) in New York, Andy Kehoe returns for his third solo show with Jonathan LeVine Gallery with new works collectively entitled Luminous Reverie. Continuing a new process (sculpted elements mixed in with poured resin and paint) first revealed to us during a show in Los Angeles last year (covered), the Pittsburgh-based painter has given his human-animal hybrid figures and forested backgrounds new life. Patricia Piccinini – “Skywhale” Hot Air Balloon

Patricia Piccinini, the subject of one of our Art Focus features earlier this year, has taken to the skies with her latest work again showcasing her love for the grotesque and her strong imagination. The Skywhale hot air balloon was commissioned for the Centenary of Canberra, and will be floating by different locations in Australia the rest of the year. Wonderful Land marks David Benjamin Sherry’s second solo exhibition at OHWOW and features photographs from the American Western and Southwestern states, taken with a large format, handmade, analog wooden film camera over the course of several months. The artist prints each image in his own darkroom, creating vivid and detailed images with brilliant colors. Streets: Andrew Schoultz (SF)

Andrew Schoultz recently painted this mural in San Francisco on the side of Pop’s Bar on 24th and York Stree in the Mission District. The Victorian style structure was reinvigorated with the locally-based artist’s kinetic imagery including some of the motifs that appear commonly in his work – horses, bricks, telephone poles, and more. As you can see, the work navigated around the various architectural components as well as incorporated some existing graffiti. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.

As we previously shared with you, El Mac is currently in Denmark for a show that opened tonight at Galerie Wolfsen. Along with an impressive array of new paintings created with his signature spray technique, the LA-based street muralist also gifted the city of Aalborg with a new public piece to enjoy. Frieze Week NYC ’12: NADA Fair

One of the art fairs that has hitched its wagon to Frieze is that of the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). This year’s NADA fair moved to a new spacious location on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and presented a nice range of emerging and mid-career artists. Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments. Openings: Nychos – “Pellis Os Omentum” @ Galo Art Gallery

Currently on display through the weekend at the Galo Art Gallery in Torino, Italy is a solo show from Austrian painter Nychos. Pellis Os Omentum includes a series of paintings and drawings that closely references the anatomical focus and cartoonish quality of his street work.
