Preview / Setup: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

If you remember, late last year, we shared with you some photos of JR touring Japan to spread his Inside Out love in his giant photo booth / converted truck. Turns out, that was only a precursor for a show opening officially this weekend at the Watarium Museum in Tokyo. As you can see from these preview images, the French “photograffeur” is already busy prepping the outside and inside of the institution with his distinctive work. Photos via Alabaz and the artist. Last week, How & Nosm brought their outdoor graffiti talents from the streets into Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s brand new pop-up space in the heart of Chelsea. Entitled Late Confessions, this series of works are reflective of their unique multi-cultural heritage. Art Focus: Fabien Mérelle

Last month at Art Stage Singapore (covered), our attention was drawn to photos of this exquisite sculpture from French artist Fabien Mérelle shown at the Edouard Malingue Gallery booth). The piece entitled Pentateuque features a man bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders (in the form of an elephant), a translation of a drawing by the same artist into a three-dimensional form. Tomorrow night (February 7th), Spoke Art will again be the site of a solo show from Tim Doyle in San Francisco. The Austin-based illustrator and screen printer will once again be reprising his re-interpretations of famous TV show locations with a new body of work entitled UnReal Estate II (see part I from 2012 here). Clever takes on this unique subject matter include renderings of familiar places from shows like Futurama, Arrested Development, Firefly, The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Simpsons, and more…

This Friday (February 8th) at 12pm EST, fans of RIME will see a pretty unique release through the good people at 1xRUN. The Arrest Sheets portfolios are priced at a hefty $500 but you get a lot for your money as the edition (run of 30) includes drawings (like the ones here) as well as hand embellished prints & folders with each being unique. Kai & Sunny for Southbank Centre

London’s art lovers will be getting a healthy dose of Kai & Sunny soon as the Southbank Centre has commissioned the two to design imagery for their their membership pack, posters, press and all other media (set to run two years). The artistic complex consists of three main buildings (the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Hayward Gallery), and is Europe’s largest center for the arts so it will certainly be a high profile showcase for the duo’s abstracted birds (which will also be seen on an outdoor billboard). Currently in Japan, Geoff McFetridge has renewed his collaboration with Heath Ceramics for a show at Playmountain. My Head Disappears When My Hands Are Thinking not only features the Los Angeles-based artist’s minimalistic paintings, but also his specially designed ceramic items (also seen 2011 in LA).
