Openings: JR – “Encrages” @ Galerie Perrotin

Last week, Galerie Perrotin paid host to French photographer and street artist JR in their Paris showspace when he displayed a new body of work entitled Encrages. Featuring his outdoor technique translated onto smaller found objects, the exhibition brought together many of the TED prize winner’s previous projects as we talked about in our studio visit leading up to the show. Releases: El Mac – “Prayer” Print

Later today, at a random time here, El Mac will be releasing a rare print through Moon Editions in San Francisco. Entitled Prayer, this limited edition is based on a painting from a show earlier this year and will come in three different colors – Vermilion Red (edition of 49), Metallic Copper (edition of 39), and Teal Blue variant (Edition of 9). The print is 21″ x 28″ and is a two-color serigraph (signed and numbered). More photos after the jump…

Update: Luke Chueh for “East West Connect” @ Above Second

The Arrested Motion crew will be flying in to Hong Kong tomorrow as our first curatorial project, East West Connect, opens up at the Above Second Gallery on Friday night. Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden Preview

Another reason to hit up the major art fairs is the opportunities to see the new gems from Mark Ryden in person. For this year’s Miami rendition of Art Basel, the lowbrow painter will be bringing at least two originals with him to the party – Main Street USA (seen above) for the Michael Kohn booth (Booth K10) and Pinxit Jajo (seen after the jump) for the Paul Kasmin booth (Booth B14).

Streets: Blu (Buenos Aires)

For fans who can’t get enough of his work, you are in luck. Italian street savant, Blu, has just painted another politically charged mural (you may remember a recent timely wall he created for Greece) in Buenos Aires featuring a mass of people blindfolded by colors of the Argentine national flag. In the back, there appears to be a dark figure wearing a presidential sash and a suit and tie. More photos after the jump from BA Street Art.

On Saturday afternoon, Steve “ESPO” Powers and Todd “REAS” James hosted an dizzying one-day reinterpretation of their legendary Street Market exhibition, without Barry McGee, at ICY Signs in Brooklyn. ICY was Powers and crew’s 5400 sq. feet downtown sign-painting studio on Livingston Street while working on his Brooklyn Love Letters project (covered). Openings: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part I)

AM recently visited Taiwan to catch  Ai Weiwei’s absent exhibition at the TFAM (Taipei Fine Arts Museum). As the show’s title implies, Ai Weiwei was not present for the opening as he’s still working on clearing his previous “issues” with his home country’s government. This museum show of the controversial Chinese artist is practically a retrospective ,with spanning works from 1983-present, giving the people of Taiwan a taste of the talent and unique point of view that Ai brings to the table. Openings: Blek le Rat – “60/30” @ 941 Geary

Blek le Rat opened up his latest exhibition, 60/30 Saturday at 941 Geary. The title of the exhibition represents his 60th birthday and 30 years of being an artist and celebrates a career that has heavily influenced the street art being put up today. The show consists mainly of large canvases featuring worked backgrounds and his signature stencil work, with a few collaborations with artists such as Hush and APEX in the mix.
