The place was filled from the start and crowds of people were lined up to meet the artist who also took the time to sign his artwork. Baby Tattooville ’11: Circus Punk Customs

Circus Punk customs are a new addition to Baby Tattooville. 50 blank pieces were available for attending artists to paint and work on. Once finished, these customs will be arranged in rows and BT attendees will have the chance to compete for them. Similar to what is done at fairs, attendees will get to throw at these and try to knock them down. Each person will then get to keep the custom that he or she strikes. Baby Tattooville ’11: Art Jam Begins

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is easily the most recognized event of this special weekend and has existed since Baby Tattooville’s very first year (see 2010, 2009, 2008). As always, artists in attendance are given the freedom to contribute to the large collaboration piece at anytime during the weekend up until the deadline on Saturday night. Upon completion of the painting Saturday night, the work is used to produce prints overnight that attendees will receive Sunday morning. See photos by Carlos Gonzalez of the early stages […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Blacksmith Tony Swatton

This year, Baby Tattooville “secret society” members were treated to something completely different from previous years. Master Blacksmith Tony Swatton, known to many as THE blacksmith of Hollywood, was invited to BT’s 5th year anniversary. Samples of Swatton’s work were displayed throughout the Mission Inn Catacombs. This included helmets, swords, and armor pieces that are similar to those created by Swatton for the Capital One commercials and Pirates of the Caribbean movies we are all so familiar with. Swatton took requests from attendees and produced […]

Preview: Lola Dupré ‘Shrapnel’ @ Phone Booth Gallery

Having recently been turned on to Lola Dupré’s work, we were excited to hear that the Glasgow based collage artist has an upcoming solo exhibition at Phone Booth Gallery in Long Beach. Entitled Shrapnel, the exhibition will showcase Lola’s ‘exploding’ portraits of icons taken from popular culture, movie starlets and fellow artists as her subject matter. Dupré’s process is what first sparked our interest in her work – She literally dissects and reassembles her subject matter layer-by-layer by taking multiple prints of an original photograph […]

Streets: David Flores – “Basquiat” (Los Angeles)

Apart from the Cyrcle. crew painting their latest mural, David Flores also took the opportunity to paint his own mural at the Culver City building complex which houses mural work by Herakut and Andrew Hem. The Branded Arts sponsored project had Flores painting his signature style design on a big scale. Last time we saw Flores working on a wall, he took one of Phil Stern’s iconic images which featured James Dean. This time around Flores went a different route and created a rendering of […]

Openings: Zeng Fanzhi @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. […]

Studio visits: Skewville

The twin brothers Ad Deville and Droo who make up Skewville first came to prominence around 1999, when their wooden sneakers became an ubiquitous sight hanging from New York power lines. Since then, they have continued to push the boundaries of street communications. AM was fortunate enough to visit their studio hidden in a basement in Bushwick, NY as they prepared for their upcoming show entitled Anti-Social Networking at the Black Book Gallery in Denver opening on October 7th. Ad Deville showed us the entire collection of […]
