Videos: Blu – “Megunica” Documentary

Wow. We sat down to scan through the Megunica documentary real quick but ended up watching the whole thing. The film first made rounds in 2009 or so and has won multiple awards at various film festivals but we don’t think there has been an easy way for street art fans get ahold of it – until now. Wired Italy has now made the entire film, all 83 minutes of it, available streamed on their website. For those unfamiliar, the footage follows Blu on a […]

Showing: Supakitch – “Based on a True Story” @ Muriel Guepin

We recently went by Muriel Guepin Gallery to check out French-born, Brooklyn-based artist Supakitch’s (featured) first major NYC exhibition, entitled Based on a True Story, which is up through the end of July. For the show, Supa presented mostly new paintings on canvas and works on handmade paper that featured his characteristic bold colors, fine line-work and music-inspired compositions. Although Supa’s stylized animal characters were still present in these pieces, they were more subtle and abstracted than usual. For example, one of the most eye-catching […]

Streets: JR (New York)

After pasting up his newest piece at the prominent Bowery & Houston location in New York, JR continued his Inside Out project and his focus on the Dakota Native Americans with an even larger mural at what looks like another popular wall.  Nice touch also leaving the graf and Shepard Fairey piece untouched on the wall. More photos after the jump as the French street photographer hit up other locations in the NYC.

Openings: Adam Caldwell & Jonathan Darby – “Intersection” @ White Walls SF

A couple weeks ago, White Walls in San Francisco hosted a dual show from native son Adam Caldwell and UK artist Jonathan Darby. Entitled Intersection, the premise of the show was a meeting of cultures – American by Caldwell and Brazilian by Darby with his favela installation. Take a look at of the opening photos courtesy of Berlin Tomas after the jump…

Streets: JR Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Last week we first showed you the pics of the prominent Bowery & Houston mural completed by French artist JR. The famed photographer utilized the simple but enlarged image of Native American “DJ 2 Bears”. Of course, no man is an island. JR called in the help from some friends involved in the (Sioux) Standing Rock Nation project in the Dakotas to help finish wheat pasting the location. AM caught the crew hard at work on the streets of Manhattan. Check out the photos taken for […]

Openings: Ron English – ‘Skin Deep’ @ Lazarides Gallery

It’s been a little while since 2009’s Lazarus Rising at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, the last UK solo exhibition by Ron English. Two years and a gallery switch later, the pop surrealist, street artist and culture jammer is back — in the streets as well as indoors with Skin Deep: Post-Instinctual Afterthoughts On Psychological Portraiture, his new solo effort (previewed) at Lazarides Gallery in London. English confirmed to AM that the show’s 16 canvases (on display with a couple of sculptures) have been 12 months […]

Teaser: Barry McGee – “New Work” @ Modern Art (London)

Londoners, get ready to throw your TWIST’s up in the air. Legendary graf and street artist Barry McGee will be hitting up the UK with a new show this coming Thursday, June 30th, at Stuart Shave / Modern Art. If his fantastic installation and exhibition, Easy Tonto, held there in 2005 is any indication, fans in England who have been looking across the pond in envy at the MOCA McGee, ESPO, and REAS Street Market will be in for a treat. More views of the 2005 exhibition after […]

Openings: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Last week, AM attended the group exhibition curated by KAWS and Erik Parker, a unique project hosted by Paul Kasmin Gallery. The show Pretty on the Inside (teased) included works from seven American artists – Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, Karl Wirsum and of course, the two curators. The visually intense and almost organic feel of works served to focus the viewer on the raw beauty within. The show runs until August 19th, so make it a point to stop by if you’re […]

Openings / Benefits: “Sea No Evil 2011” @ Riverside Municipal Auditorium

Last night in Riverside, the Socal art scene made a rare migration into the IE for the annual Sea No Evil show and benefit. Proceeds of the auction go to Captain Paul Watson and his Sea Shepard Conservation Society, of Whale Wars fame, with many of the artists we follow participating including Jeff Soto with this year’s featured image seen above. More photos after the jump…

Time goes by quick as he’s already set to open his newest solo, Dark Light, at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery on June 30th.
