Openings: Kai-lan (Karen) Chau – “Inner Dialogue” @ Sloan Fine Art

AM recently attended the premiere show for Kai-Lan (Karen) Chau at Sloan Fine Art. The bi-continental artist who works in China and in California for her beloved Nickelodeon hit Ni Hao, Kai-Lan showcased her new body of work that featured animals composed in multiple environments. In addition, Karen took some time to design two detailed fiberglass sculptures from two of her characters. Check it out after the jump.

Openings: Homeroom Redu @ Reed Space

AM attended the opening night for a special charity group show hosted by Reed Space. Coordinated to raise dollars in an effort to offset the lack of funding in today’s public school system. Gathering 5 notable artists: Jose Parla, Scott Campbell, Luis Gispert, Lucien Marc-Smith and Neck Face to donate their artwork to be placed on limited edition posters, tote bags and t-shirts which were available to attendees to purchase. Preview: Melissa Forman – “Keepers of Creation” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Tonight at Corey Helford Gallery, Melissa Forman will be opening her show “Keepers of Creation” consisting of 16 new paintings. Forman’ mystical female portraiture sets out to portray the characters as protectors of natural world and are wonderfully detailed. Of note, the gallery has generously committed to giving away four 5×7 mini-giclees from Forman to the first 300 guests who arrive at the opening (7-10pm) Some more preview images after the jump…

Last night at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Sanrio opened the doors to a tremendous 50th Anniversary celebration featuring carnival games, costumed characters, special food booths, limited edition event products from the company, and of course – a themed art group show (curated by JAPAN LA). Some weeks back, AM spent time with Ernesto Yerena Montejano at his garage studio in Los Angeles. Over the course of three and a half years, until summer 2009, Yerena worked as an artist assistant for Shepard Fairey at both Studio Number One and Studio Number Two (featured). 2010 Whitney Annual Gala & Studio Party

AM recently attended the Whitney American Museum’s Annual Gala and Studio Party celebration. The focus was to raise funds to continue the goal of supporting emerging and established American artists.
