Opening: DZINE – “Voodoo” @ Leo Koenig Projekte

Chicago-based artist Dzine recently opened a solo show entitled “Voodoo” at NY’s Leo Koenig Projekte. The inspiration for this current body of work came from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao, during Dzine’s residency at the Instituto Buena Bista, Curaçao’s Center for Contemporary Art. While there, he stumbled upon Swaybar, a unique aspect of the island’s popular culture in which youth create custom elongated bicycles as both transportation and status symbols. Dzine, who is well-known for his own customized low-rider bicycles, secretly created one of […]

Studio Visits: Retna

AM rarely experiences the sensation of studio envy, but the pang certainly hit us upon arriving at Retna‘s abode and work space. It was pretty much a “Holy Guacamole!” moment. And we don’t even like Robin. The studio in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles apparently measures some 3,500 square feet. We immediately knew it would be perfect for the AM team training sessions in preparation for the international synchronised hula hooping championships. Unfortunately, Retna wasn’t very keen on the idea of subletting to […]

Openings: Ericailcane – “We Were Living in the Woods” @ Fifty24SF

Better known for large scale outdoor murals typically depicting playful and sometimes sinister looking animals, Italy-based artist Ericailcane brought his artwork indoors with the opening of his show “We Were Living In the Woods” at Fifty24SF. The show featured a wide arrange of ink drawings (some watercolored), etchings, screenprints (some handpainted), a few copies of his book “Il Numbero Delle Bestie”, and a few sculptures to grace the window display. As shown in our preview of the show (here), he painted a new piece for […]

Openings: ROA Pop-Up Show (Los Angeles)

Last night, AM spent the night hanging out with some friends and checking out a couple shows in LA. The first place we hit was the pop up show from ROA hosted by Thinkspace at the New Puppy Gallery. A rising star in the street scene, the Belgium artist filled the space with a wall installation painted on found objects, projected photos of his prolific works, and originals of all sizes including lenticular and pieces with moving parts reveal his signature anatomical style. More photos […]

Openings: Rosson Crow – “Myth of the American Motorcycle” @ CAC

Rosson Crow (featured) recently opened her exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (CAC) to a excited Ohio crowd. The show entitled “Myth of the American Motorcycle” (previewed) centered around the classic highway icon and it’s effect on American culture. Rosson underwent an intense study of the biker lifestyle the year prior in anticipation for this show. It seems that it paid off as this series is a great match for “RoCrow’s” nostalgic abstraction on familiar settings that “never-was”. Check out this great show after […]

Overtime: Nov 7 – Nov 13

The piece above is titled “One Day This Kid…” by David Wojnarowicz.  In light of recent bullying inflicted upon GLBTQ youth – making it a national issue – this work of art is important and powerful. Share it by downloading the image to print out here. Left without a home since the closing of Deitch Projects, Keith Haring estate joins Gladstone Gallery. Scott Campbell burns his own sold out show in dispute with gallery.  Why he did it. Yvonne Force Villareal house includes artwork by […]

Well, look no further as the Superflat master has completed his double dragons for the Gagosian Rome opening. The two immense paintings comprise of nine panels to form a painting measuring over 59 feet each!
