Preview: Mizuma Art Gallery @ Armory 2010

Tokyo’s Mizuma Art returns to New York City this week to participate in Armory 2010, and to whet our appetites before the fair, they sent us a few preview images. Unlike at Art Basel Miami, where the gallery had a solo show with conceptual/video artist Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba (covered), at Armory, Mizuma will be showing a variety of works by their stable of emerging and mid-career Japanese artists, including such AM favorites as Ai Yamaguchi, Akino Kondoh, Tomoko Konoike and Masakatsu Sashie. Ai Yamaguchi x Shu Uemura Mural

On a recent trip to the Bay Area, we randomly wandered into a Shu Uemura boutique on Fillmore Street. Although we knew thatÂ Ai Yamaguchi has done work with the popular Japanese cosmetic line in the past, we didn’t realize that she had painted a huge mural for this location several years back. Armory Focus: Mizuma Art @ Armory NYC

Japan’s Mizuma gallery made quite a splash at this year’s Armory, selling out most of the art they imported from the land of the rising sun. As usual, their booth was filled with some of Japan’s notables: Akino Kondoh, Sashie Masakatsu, Makoto Aida, Aoyama Satoru, andÂ Tanada Koji to name a few. Openings: Ai Yamaguchi @ Robert & Tilton

We were wondering what the large wooden installation (previously posted) was that Ai Yamaguchi was working on for her Roberts & Tilton show. Well, the photo you see above is the mural inside which could only be accessed by climbing in the structure (“shoelessly” we might add). More photos of the opening after the jump.

Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura.
