One of the most anticipated events of Basel Week Miami was the opening party for Ryan McGinness’ latest series of works Women: The New Blacklight Paintings. Presented by the folks at Country Club x The Standard Miami, the show was held inside a South Beach Strip Club (Club Madonna). One of the highlights of the Scope Art Fair this year was the booth from LA’s Corey Helford Gallery. As they did at Art Basel Switzerland, Hauser & Wirth brought some spectacular Paul McCarthy pieces to share with the Art Basel Miami Beach attendees. Luckily, they also exhibited works by other artists in their esteemed program, including Louise Bourgeois, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Mary Heilmann, Roni Horn, Bharti Kher, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Roman Signer and Monika Sosnowska. Two stars of the last auction season – Rudolph Stingel and Kelley Walker, who both had auction records set, were featured up close and personal at Paula Cooper’s booth during Art Basel Miami Beach. The gallery’s stacked roster of artists provided them with fantastic pieces by the aforementioned duo and also Carl Andre and Wayne Gonzales (pictured above). Sharing the stage with the street art at Art Basel Week Miami were the graffiti artists although the lines between the two are sometimes blurred. With events like Graffiti Gone Global, crews from all over the country could be seen working on throwups, tags, and large complex pieces putting their handstyles and techniques on full display. Talk about a booth at Art Basel Miami Beach that had a space full of the world’s hottest artists. Italy’s Massimo De Carlo’s booth featured scorching youngsters and established artists alike, including Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, and Kanye West favorite George Condo.
