Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – David Kordansky Gallery

One of the most exciting galleries showing emerging art talent in Culver City, David Kordansky Gallery had a colorful and visually stunning booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary that contained a mixture of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and photography. It included artists from their excellent gallery roster, including Amy Bessone, Aaron Curry, Mark Flores, Ruby Neri, Anthony Pearson, Mai-Thu Perret, and Lesley Vance. As AM was perusing the various booths at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, we ran into a painting by a instantly recognizable artist, lusted over by many a street art collector. For one 4-day weekend, the spectacular Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood was the site of the first ever Art Los Angeles Contemporary, which took place January 28-31. Almost every top gallery in Los Angeles and a few from around the world participated in the event, showing new works from emerging to internationally-recognized blue chip artists. This year’s London Art Fair, held from January 13-17, attracted over 23,000 visitors and featured a wide variety of art to hold their attention. No matter how many art fairs we see or attend, we can never get enough of tremendous amount of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and other art on display – buffet style. We always look forward to the Pulse art fair because it is one of the only opportunities for those outside of Tokyo or Los Angeles to see the stunning carved woodblocks of Japanese artist Kenichi Yokono. This year at Pulse Miami, Yokono’s work was jointly shown by LA’s Mark Moore Gallery and Vienna’s Hilger Contemporary. One of our favorite galleries in the world is Tokyo’s Tomio Koyama, which represents many of Japan’s best know artists, as well as such Western artists such as Gert and Uwe Tobias, Mark Ryden and Tom Sachs. At Art Basel this year, Koyama focused mainly on their stable of Japanese artists, including several amazing works by Hideaki Kawashima and Yoshitomo Nara. One of the booths we were really impressed with during Art Basel Week was Joshua Liner Gallery’s showcase at SCOPE. It was a diverse group reflecting some of his successes this year from represented artists such as Matsu (interviewed), Kris Kuksi, and Evan Hecox. At the Pulse art fair, we were constantly running into new and wonderful art work. One of the artists that we were fortunate enough to discover was Laura Ball who showed with both Morgan Lehman Gallery and Kopeikin Gallery. Her primary technique is the use of watercolor with her main subjects being animals and her family members.
