Art HK ’12 Art Fair – BMW Art Car x Andy Warhol

This year, Art Hong Kong had a special booth that was not hosted by a gallery, but an automotive company. BMW, long a sponsor of the arts with their Art Car program in where legends like Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Jeff Koons and Alexander Calder were recruited to design the exterior of their flagship sports car. Art HK ’12: Yayoi Kusama

One of the featured artists at Art Hong Kong this year was Yayoi Kusama. Her revolutionary style of dots and environmental immersion has received distinction from both Western and Asian art institutions. Even fashion icon Louis Vuitton has recently honored her creativity with a collaborative project that kicks off this season. When attending top-tiered fairs such as Art HK, one can expect to encounter many notable works by some of the top names in the industry. Once in a while, a piece will stop you to take a closer look. Another booth we spent time at during Art HK was the one stocked by Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki gallery. Their booth held a solo feature for Rei Sato and her latest body of work entitled All Monsters Hold Secrets in Their Grasp. Another booth AM stops by whenever we are at art fairs the Tokyo-based Mizuma Gallery. Not only do they represent one of our favorite artists, Masakatsu Sashie and his entrancing orbs of futuristic and post-apocalyptic goodness as well as the talents of Akino Kondoh, but their roster of artists always includes much of the up-and-coming talent from Japan. One of the booths we quite enjoyed at Art Hong Kong was the Elms Lesters showing with Adam Neate (interviewed). As we have stated many times before like at his exhibition last October in the UK (covered), AM is quite enamored with the street turned contemporary artist’s dimensional paintings. Studio Visits: Yoshitomo Nara x Pace Prints @ Art HK

In anticipation for this year’s Art Hong Kong, we bring you a special studio visit to Pace Print’s Manhattan studios. For the fair opening on the 17th, Pace will be unveiling a special edition woodcut print created in collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara.
