First Look: Banksy – “Gross Domestic Product” (Greater London)

An unusual new housewares “store” called Gross Domestic Product opened overnight in the south London town of Croyd0n. Turns out Banksy has now confirmed that the elaborate art installation is his, an attempt to hold off a greeting card company from seizing legal custody of his name by creating his own range of merchandise. Before his stunt of setting up shop without a permit to make a point about tourism on the streets during the Venice Biennale, Banksy had previously left an unconfirmed stencil on an abandoned house next to the canal. Created at water level, the elusive British artist must have used a boat to steady himself as he painted a young child wearing a life jacket and holding a pink flare up in the air. Making an uninvited appearance in the city during the Venice Biennale, Banksy decided to set up shop and appear to sell his art on the streets along with all the other vendors. The difference being he didn’t have a permit to do so and the art done in the elusive artist’s uniquely tongue-in-cheek style. Making a statement during the holiday season in his own unique way, Banksy has created a new piece in South Wales. Featuring a boy enjoying what appear to be snowflakes while trying to catch some on his tongue, the mural turns dark when you look around the corner and realize it’s actually ash from a burning dumpster, not snow. The genius of Banksy was on display again Friday night in London when his iconic Girl Red Balloon sold for a record £953,829. Right after the hammer, the piece from the British artist ran through what appeared to be a remotely activated shredder hidden in the unusually thick frame, leaving half of the work hanging from the bottom in strips. Last week, Lazinc in London opened a show featuring some of Banksy’s most iconic works (gleaned from private collections), focusing in on the 2002-2008 period of his career. Coinciding with some of the time Steve Lazarides spent as the elusive street artist’s photographer and gallerist, the work curated for the exhibition include stenciled canvases, unique paintings, sculptural pieces, limited-edition prints and more.
