Following our recently curated group exhibitions in Hong Kong; East West Connect and Los Angeles; City of Fire, AM’s UK correspondent Sven Davis has branched out with his own curatorial endeavour Space//Form. The group exhibition brings together over 100 young contemporary artists, and opens 6th September at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery. Curator, Sven Davis, has worked in architecture for over 20 years, so the thematic center of the exhibition is close to his heart as Space//Form centers around notions of the architectural landscape. Another weekend, another Rewind feature here on AM. Leading off our summary of videos this week is the inspiring story (from The Guardian) of Syrian cartoonist Ali Farzat, who founded Syria’s first satirical weekly, Ad Domani. In August 2011, he was attacked by Bashar al-Assad’s militia who broke his hands to stop him from drawing Assad. While on our way to hit up a plethora of shows associated with Art Basel Week Miami last night at the Design District, we passed by the The Living Room installation. AM was pleased to see a visit this week from NY based artist Olek (featured), we don’t often get to see a crocheted cab on the streets of London! Great fun and very impressive. So, it was good news to hear that January next year Olek will be crocheting the entire gallery space of Tony’s Gallery and live there. Sounds like a show not to be missed. A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction and exhibition entitled RE:DEFINE to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus. Curators for the event, The Future Tense, have put together a diverse roster of 30 artists (full list here) including Shepard Fairey, Katrin Fridriks, Polly Morgan, D*Face, Haroshi, Brian Adam Douglas (Elbow-Toe), Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Dan Witz, Faile, James Marshall (Dalek) with Ben Eine scheduled for a large-scale public installation. Currently showing at the Von Der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, Germany is an exhibition with a rather cumbersome title – Street Art – Meanwhile in deepest East Anglia, thunderbirds were go . . . . Streets: Eine – LA Weekly Building

UK-based street artist Ben Eine, who recently showed in SF (covered), made the trip down to Southern California soon after as we saw him at both the D*Face opening and of course participating at the Art in the Streets exhibition (covered) at the MOCA. Just like in San Francisco, he found time to work on some street typographical magic, this time on the LA Weekly building. More images of the crossword themed piece after the jump…
