Openings: Cleon Peterson – “The Brinksman” @ Guerrero Gallery

Last Saturday evening, Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco hosted the opening of Cleon Peterson’s latest solo exhibition entitled The Brinksman. The paintings in the show bring you into a world put on the brink through corruption and violence by figures that are motivated by their own selfish needs. His color palette and use of dominating dark shadows show a window of what it feels like to let immorality rot away our society. Check out photos of opening night after the jump…

Basel Week Miami: “Here Lies Georges Wildenstein” @ Primary Projects

A couple nights ago, the Primary Projects space in Miami’s Design District hosted Here Lies Georges Wildenstein, a group show featuring Marc Bijl, Retna, Michael Vasquez, Miru Kim, Cleon Peterson, George Sánchez-Calderón, Manny Prieres, Andrew Nigon, Scott Shannon, Christina Pettersson, Shelter Serra, How & Nosm, Kenton Parker, Cole Sternberg, Edouard Nardon, & Jel Martine. The reference to the death of Wildenstein is metaphor for the “old money” powering the art world along with “the mass of collectors, curators, museum trustees (those who wield considerable socio-political powers)” over […]

Openings: Cleon Peterson – “White Flag” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

AM attended the opening night for Cleon Peterson’s show White Flag at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. Being the first solo exhibition in New York, we were impressed by the sheer size and raw graphics displayed by Cleon. His color choices and figure composition seems to hold nothing back hitting the viewers right between the eyes with pure emotions. As mentioned in our preview, the gross violence and lawless nature of his subjects seem to convey giving in to one’s dark side, thus […]

Previews: Cleon Peterson – “White Flag” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Cleon Peterson is getting ready to unleash a new series of brutal works at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition is entitled White Flag, which may mean surrender to you or I, but after checking out the graphic violence and gross depravity in these paintings, it may mean surrendering to the crazier side of human impulse. We stopped by the gallery to bring you a closer look at what you’ll be experiencing through his twisted landscapes. The show is officially on view already with a special […]

Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Daybreak” @ New Image Art

Revelries of unrestrained passions, secret desires, and violent indulgences invaded the New Image Art Gallery recently with the opening of Cleon Peterson’s newest show – Daybreak (previewed). Drawing inspiration from Nietzsche’s Daybreak: Reflections on Moral Prejudices, Peterson seeks to graphically explore both the light and dark sides of the human condition. As you will see, in addition to his usual action-packed landscapes, there were also some interesting abstract works included in this new body of work. More opening images after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’10: New Image Art

Last night, New Image Art took over South Beach’s Cafeina for a group exhibition (teased) that should prove to be one of the more compelling events of Art Basel Week. As is often the case, Sao Paulo street art sensations Osgemeos stole the show with their heartfelt interpretations of their Brazilian countrymen, always dressed to impress in colorfully patterned attire. A selection of giant canvases, executed flawlessly with spray cans and incorporating the playful imagery and vibrant palette that has become patented by the Twins, […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10: New Image Art

New Image Art’s lineup for this year’s Art Basel Week looks sharp and could be one of the more anticipated offerings at 2010’s art extravaganza in Miami. Headlined by Osgemeos, who have been holed up at Retna’s studio working on new paintings, the list of artists will also include Judith Supine, Cleon Peterson, Skullphone, and Albert Reyes as well as a special installation piece entitled “Now I Remember” that will feature the work of Neck Face among many others. Cafeina December 1 – December 5, […]

Preview: Cleon Peterson – ‘Daybreak’ @ New Image Art

The art of Cleon Peterson has never been for the fainthearted. Like Pieter Bruegel the Elder‘s painting The Triumph of Death, his unapologetic, graphic depictions of acts of brutality are both disquieting and strangely captivating. Daybreak is the artist’s latest solo show opening this Saturday, November 20th at New Image Art Gallery. The exhibition, which draws inspiration and its title from Nietzsche’s Daybreak: Reflections on Moral Prejudices, marks Peterson’s powerful return with another morally ambiguous and beautifully composed orgy of violence. See our preview of […]

Preview: “Summer Group Show” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

August in NYC is not typically the time to see great new art, as galleries tend to schedule group shows in order not to waste their A material on the few gallery goers left in town instead of summering in the Hamptons. Past experience, however, has shown us that the Joshua Liner Gallery defies expectations with their summer show, taking the opportunity to set the stage for their upcoming season, by exhibiting a strong selection of their regular roster and introducing us to a few […]
