Openings: Kai & Sunny – “Caught by the Nest” @ Subliminal Projects

Over the weekend, artistic duo Kai & Sunny opened up a new exhibition in Los Angeles at Subliminal Projects. Entitled Caught By The Nest, the new body of work from the British artists featured monochromatic pieces inspired by the book The Reason I Jump, written by Naoki Higashida and translated by David Mitchell, a long time collaborator with Kai & Sunny and author of Cloud Atlas. Also available for purchase was a collaboration print with gallery owner Shepard Fairey. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Kai & Sunny here.

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Palimpsest” @ Harvard Reischauer Institute

Brooklyn based artist Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) recently opened a new exhibition in the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University for its 40th anniversary. This sparkling showcase features classic and fresh paintings for those in the Boston area. This great show runs until November 1st and the artist reception with Matsu in attendance on September 26th. Openings: “The Baxter Collection” @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue changed it up for this month’s opening. The works on display are from the personal collection of the Baxter family, who are selling some of their collection to move overseas. The pieces in question were collected over the past decade and represent a who’s who of the pop surrealism scene including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Audrey Kawasaki, Camile Rose Garcia, Lori Earley, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Liz McGrath, Glenn Barr, Donald Roller Wilson, Kukula, Ana Bagayan, Fuco Ueda, Joe Sorren, Brian Despain, and Femke Hiemstra. Openings: Ryan McLennan – “Fabrications” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last Friday was the opening night of Ryan McLennan’s newest show Fabrications at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver. The 2011 Western Award Winner spent the last 12 months channeling the cinema of filmmakers like Guy Madden and Andrei Tarkovsky for the inspiration to create the 20 piece show which will be on display until October 5th. Releases: Mark Dean Veca – “20 Years” Book

LA based artist Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently released a new book 20 Years Works through Zero+ Publishing. Along with the book release the artist opened a solo show at Western Project on September 7th, presenting a selection of works from the new hardcover book, and the official book launch and signing is scheduled for September 14, at 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the same venue. Young Americans: Antimatter is a group exhibition that just closed in Singapore at the Gajah Gallery featuring Amanda Charchian, Bumblebee (seen above), Greg Allen-Muller, Lisa Solberg, Judith Supine and Zio Ziegler. Curated by Simmy Swinder, the show features a diverse collection of works from the selected young American artists. Three years after his first Italian solo show at MAN, the Art Museum in Nuoro (Sardinia), and six months since his last European solo show at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerpen, Belgium, Ed Templeton is back in Europe, opening a solo show at Jerome Zodo Contemporary in Milan, Italy. As previously announced, Tauba Auerbach recently opened a solo show at STANDARD (OSLO). Showing a whole new body of work that includes installation works, sculptural pieces, and canvases, the American artist worked with a wide range of materials from granite, sand, glass, resin, opal, to plywood and woven fabric. Previews: Bec Winnel – “Earthly Beings” @ Thinkspace

Later this evening, the Thinkspace Gallery will be opening Earthly Beings, a new collection of works from Bec Winnel in their project room (also see Matt Doust in their main space). Winnel is an Australian artist and accomplished illustrator, who works in graduated washes of watercolor paint, pastel, and pencil. For this showing, she has produced a series of dreamy and lush portraits, of which you can see in some shots from the studio as well as a couple preview images below. Discuss this show here.
