Previews: Jonathan Darby ‘Favela’ @ Signal Gallery

Jonathan Darby’s solo show Favela opens soon at the Signal Gallery, and this video teaser shows a little what to expect without giving the game away. Darby has linked up with CARF (Children at Risk Foundation) who work with street kids in Sao Paulo for the exhibition, and some of the proceeds from the show will go to the charity. David Shillinglaw’s Hobo Chic, opened last Thursday at Negre Gallery in the Columbia Road area of London, and AM went along to take a look. Shillinglaw’s work involves a multitude of surfaces, mediums and media. It looks like Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) is tackling another pop icon for his upcoming C.O.L.A. Fellowship exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. After revealing his version of the Kool-Aid Man in January, the LA-based artist turns his attention to Charlie the Tuna on his 50th anniversary as the mascot for Starkist Tuna. Video/Armory Week ’11 – David Ellis Wins Pulse New York 2011 Prize

Over the weekend, members of the Pulse Prize selection committee made the exciting announcement that this year’s Pulse Prize would be awarded to David Ellis. Ellis—represented by the Joshua Liner Gallery in the fair’s Impulse solo project section—exhibited a varied collection of sculpture, video and installation, including True Value (Paint Fukette), an animatronic assembly of paint buckets orchestrated to create a complex drum beat. Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. We continue our coverage of Armory Week ’11 with Volta NY . Volta sets itself apart from other art fairs by exhibiting galleries that have each elected to show only one artist. This selection of solo shows makes for a more consistent and intensive art viewing experience as compared with other fairs, which is always engaging and challenging.
