Previews: Friends With You – “Happy Rainbow” @ TMTP Cultural Center

Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center. Much like their interactive Rainbow City shows in NYC and Miami, FWY will bring large scale inflatable bouncing installations as well as fiberglass, plush and resin sculptures to envelope visitors with their signature happy vibes. Back in September, we first reported on Beck’s Green Box Project with an interview with featured artist Mark Jenkins. The linchpin to the project was the augmented reality app dubbed the Beck’s Key App that projected images and animation over certain flashpoints in different cities. During our sojourn into the art extravaganza in Miami known as Art Basel Week, we were happy to be able to visit the artistic duo FriendsWithYou in their home base, office, and gallery space in the Design District. Still showing through the rest of the week until the 24th is the FriendsWithYou exhibition in Paris. In The Beginning at colette features the Miami design collective’s bronze sculptures, series of prints including two exclusive to the store, an animation video piece, wall murals, as well as a plethora of art products. FWY also designed the storefront and the “water bar” space of the gallery, all based on the theme of expressing the inner-child inside all of us. More photos after the jump…

Starting tomorrow, August 29th, Miami collective FriendsWithYou (who just exhibited in New York) will be showing at the Colette in Paris. In The Beginning will feature bronze sculptures, a series of graphic illustrations, including some in-store exclusives, an animated video, and a small world of pets magic gifts and limited editions all presented with the childlike innocence and geometric mastery the duo is known for. Several nights ago, AM attended the opening of FriendsWithYou’s “:)” show at the new location of The Hole Gallery. Neither the sweltering heat nor the torrential downpours from the flash thunderstorms could keep the masses of fans away that packed the house to see the first ever New York solo exhibition from the colorful Miami duo Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III who combine their collective happy vibes to form FWY. Openings: FriendsWithYou – “Rainbow City” @ High Line (New York)

Wednesday night saw the transport of FriendsWithYou’s massive installation Rainbow City (first seen in Miami) to New York to celebrate the opening of Section 2 of the High Line. The air-filled structures, some up to 40 feet high, from Sam and Tury, who make up the Miami based collective are sculptural representations of their colorful abstractions, 0f which some smaller versions were seen at The Hole last night (more on that later). Next Thursday, June 9th, at The Hole in New York, Miami based art collective FriendsWithYou will be introducing a new body of work simply titled with a smiley face emoticon. The name of the show is in line with their eternally cheerful & uplifting persona, and will feature what sounds like an immersive installation of their geometric abstractions.
