Recap: RVCAloha x POW! WOW! 2014

Like in 2013 (covered), 2014 saw POW! WOW! Hawaii collaborate again with the annual gathering of RVCA’s advocates and artists for their winter getaway. Along with a highlight performance by Action Bronson at Republick to launch a BornXRaised and RVCA collaboration, guests also enjoyed watching a new mural (see video below by Andrew Tran) go up at the Keolu Skatepark in Kailua, Hawaii, painted by Dmote and Soul. Along with the footage of the mural, also check out more photos from the event below. Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta.

Streets: Tristan Eaton (Honolulu)

POW! WOW! recently completed another exciting project in their hometown of Honolulu. A few months after wrapping up another successful edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii (covered), they teamed up with Versace in order to create a large scale mural to celebrate the opening of their new flagship store. Located on one of the most prominent streets of the city, this wall was painted by Tristan Eaton who was invited by the curator Jasper Wong. Known for his patched up colorful pieces that mix everything from graffiti elements to cartoon […]

POW! WOW! Hawaii Sacred Canoe Hokulea Project

Right after setting up the Taiwan event (introduced), the POW! WOW! Hawaii family got back to work taking part in an interesting project with The Polynesian Voyaging Society in Honolulu. What they put together was focused on the sacred canoe Hokulea on which legendary lifeguard and surfer Eddie Aikau lost his life while trying to get help for his friends between the Hawaiian and Tahitian island chains. The POW! WOW! artists led by Kamea Hadar created artwork on Hokulea itself, its sister canoe Hikianalia, and a mural painted in Kaka’ako in collaboration the students of […]

POW WOW ’14 / Streets: Final Recap

After bringing you extensive coverage of this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, it’s time to recap the rest of murals that we didn’t have time to focus on. Along with local artists, the muralists travelled from all over the world (like Defer &  Norm whose calligraphy made a perfect background to Kamea Hadar’s overlaid face) to beautify the industrial district of Kaka’ako in Honolulu and to share in the aloha spirit. Enjoy the rest of the images below and see you next year! Discuss POW WOW here. Photo credit: […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Andrew Schoultz & Hannah Stouffer

Another collaboration that grabbed our attention during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii was a long joint mural from Andrew Schoultz and Hannah Stouffer. The waves and kinetic imagery from Schoultz provided a nice contrast to the softer forest renderings and volcanic eruptions of Stouffer, providing an interesting continous landscape for the people who pass by in the industrial district of Kaka’ako. Take a look at some closer shots as well as in-progress pics below… Photos credit: saL. Discuss POW WOW here. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Tristan Eaton

Tristan Eaton’s Escape The Night mural for POW! WOW! Hawaii was one of the biggest ones at this year’s edition of the festival. Getting a flat, clear, three story high and wide wall was perfect for the Los Angeles-based artist to show his skills and signature style. Creating another collage like mural, completely executed with spray paint, didn’t only show Eaton’s talent for visual art, but also his incredible skills and control of spray paint as medium. The entire image was made up of various images that included clean, corporate […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Reka

One of the pieces we enjoyed for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival by many participants and visitors, was the one created by Reka. The Melbourne-born and Berlin-based artist tackled the architectural challenges with great ease and speed, proving his long experience and enviable skills working with the spray paint medium, and was among the first ones to finish his work. Using more tropical colors in order to match the surrounding, and island friendly imagery such as flowers, tree roots, tribal faces, with lots of signature clean […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Vhils

Alexandre Farto aka Vhils was one of the most anticipated names for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Both visitors and participating artists were looking forward to seeing the Portuguese artist in action, which kept being postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Eventually, the machines started roaring and tearing down chunks of the the wall. The scene was looking and sounding very different than at any other mural, as it all looked more like a chaotic construction site than where an art piece is getting created. Using his […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Cyrcle

Dynamic art duo Cyrcle. (featured) was one of the last ones to finish their mural for POW! WOW! Hawaii festival due to their busy schedule. They had just barely enough time to pull this massive masterpiece off, but with their well-coordinated team work, they made it happen over two nights & days of painting. In their signature style, they created a hand painted image that looks like it’s an oversized vectored image. Painstakingly spraying every single dot, they created an impressive mural in front of Fresh Cafe in the Kaka’ako area […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey (featured) was one of the names we were looking forward to seeing in this year’s edition of the massive POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Even though he arrived a few days later than planned and the tropical weather wasn’t on his side, he managed to finish this huge mural after two long days of painting. Being especially intrigued by the shrine like shape of the wall, his piece is inspired by the constant battle between civilization and nature of Hawaii. The majestic tree in the middle of […]
