It’s finally here. After almost a year since AM took on Damien Hirst’s Spot Challenge and ran the gauntlet of 11 galleries around the globe, the reward has arrived for the 128 participants who completed the trip around the world. Entitled Hypothalamus Acetone Powder (can anyone explain what this substance is?), this massive silk-screened print measures 59 x 53 inches and is an amazing example of the British artist’s “Spot” artwork. Consisting of 420 uniquely colored one inch dots, this piece required a mind-boggling four hundred and twenty […]
227 hours – That’s how long it took for AM to travel the globe and complete the Spot Challenge presented by Damien Hirst x Gagosian Gallery. As we broke the news about this unique promotion, we thought, “why don’t we take Damien up on his challenge instead of just reporting on it?” Some of us have long been fans of Mr. Hirst’s spot paintings, so pair that with the opportunity to visit eight awesome cities (Geneva, Paris, London, Rome, Athens, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong) and […]
Moving to the next stop in our tour of Damien Hirst’s iconic work in his The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 retrospective occurring across the globe at all branches of the Gagosian, we turn out eyes to Athens. In contrast to the vast Beverly Hill space, the smaller Greek outpost gave us an intimate look at the YBA’s well recognized dotted paintings. More after the jump.
Being located the furthest west of any of the galleries in Larry Gagosian’s dominant empire, Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills was the very last spot (no pun intended) to host its public opening reception for Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011. The immaculate outpost in the world famous 90210 area code is currently showing twenty-three spotted paintings of various size spots and canvases. Unlike every other venue, it has the proud distinction of exhibiting the very largest spot piece, Pivalic Acid [pictured above], which measures an […]
Next stop on our tour of Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 after leaving his Paris showing takes us to the Gagosian in Hong Kong. The most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists certainly has outdone himself with this current slate of exhibitions (at least in terms of scope and ambition). This lone display in Asia of his famous dotted motif is no different than the other eleven simultaneous shows planned – filled with paintings, spots, and canvases of different […]
First stop on AM’s tour of the Gagosians to check out Damien Hirst’s unprecedented takeover of the blue-chip chain of art galleries is Paris. As the title promises, Spot Paintings features borrowed and newly created works of art featuring the UK-based artist’s signature dotted paintings. Different colors, sizes, and shapes were all variations on the theme More photos after the jump…
Has anyone taken up Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Challenge? AM will be visiting and covering as many of the Gagosian openings for you as possible now that January 12th is here, but hopefully someone out there will be able to attend all eleven locations (New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong) at some point. “Included in the exhibition are more than 300 paintings, from the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; to the smallest spot painting comprising half […]
We know you all love a good challenge and when it includes winning a guaranteed piece of art by one of the most popular artists in the world, that makes the game that much more exciting. On occasion of Damien Hirst’s takeover of all the Gagosian Gallery locations around the world, the artist will give each successful participant a signed and editioned (number depends on amount of winners) spot print. How do you win? It is pretty simple. All you have to do is visit […]
