Art HK ’12 Art Fair – BMW Art Car x Andy Warhol

This year, Art Hong Kong had a special booth that was not hosted by a gallery, but an automotive company. BMW, long a sponsor of the arts with their Art Car program in where legends like Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Jeff Koons and Alexander Calder were recruited to design the exterior of their flagship sports car. Previews: Friends With You – “Happy Rainbow” @ TMTP Cultural Center

Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center. Mike Stilkey – “Full of Smiles and Soft Attentions” @ Times Square (Hong Kong)

One of the busiest indoor malls (with more than 200,000 visitors a day) in Hong Kong’s Time Square recently played host to the work of Mike Stilkey (interviewed). Openings: Tat Ito – “Shinagawa Shinju” @ Above Second

Last month, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong played host to Japanese artist Tat Ito a selection of his paintings. Shinagawa Shinju featured the NY-based artists riff on storytellers of Japanese rakugo, a form of verbal entertainment based on comical monologues about ordinary lives. Ito’s imagery is well suited for the subject matter as the miniature characters in his work are often involved in humorous situations in the rich background tapestry of his world. Art HK ’12: Yayoi Kusama

One of the featured artists at Art Hong Kong this year was Yayoi Kusama. Her revolutionary style of dots and environmental immersion has received distinction from both Western and Asian art institutions. Even fashion icon Louis Vuitton has recently honored her creativity with a collaborative project that kicks off this season. Openings: Ai Yamaguchi – “Ashita Mata” @ 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

Hong Kong’s 10 Chancery Lane is recently collaborated with Tokyo’s Mizuma Art for the first solo HK exhibition by Ai Yamaguchi. The show, entitled Ashita Mata (Again Tomorrow), consists of a varied body of work including prints, murals and an amazing large-scale installation composed of many individual paintings. Yamaguchi seems to be continually expanding artistically through the use of these different mediums and configurations while all the time remaining true to her longtime imagery of beautiful and young edo-period courtesans.

Hong Kong has an art themed mall named K11 and it recently held its first public art fair. Curated by our friend Suitman, Public Fair No. 1 brought together a diverse mix of talent hailing from different countries around the world to deliver a multi-sensory experience.
