Studio Visits: Yoshitomo Nara x Pace Prints @ Art HK

In anticipation for this year’s Art Hong Kong, we bring you a special studio visit to Pace Print’s Manhattan studios. For the fair opening on the 17th, Pace will be unveiling a special edition woodcut print created in collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Unlike our recent trip to Pace’s Brooklyn studio with Shepard Fairey where experimental techniques were explored, this Manhattan location serves up a different set of traditional tools which were utilized by the blue chip Japanese artist. In applying a classic Ukiyo-e style technique for fine art […]

Scheduled to open on May 15th at Galerie Perrotin, The Nature of Need will feature more of the New York based artist and designer’s colorful geometric abstractions. More teaser images after the jump…

Streets: Meggs (Hong Kong)

While in Hong Kong for his Journey is the Reward showing (covered) at the Above Second Gallery, Aussie street artist Meggs also took time to leave his mark on the walls around the city. In the photo above, you can see his collaboration with locals Xeme & Sinic on a phoenix inspired mural. Other notables from HK include the shutters of the gallery as well as a re-occuring ghost image that plays on the slang for non-Asian foreigners in town. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Meggs – “Journey is the Reward” @ Above Second

Last Friday in Hong Kong, Meggs made the 4500 mile journey from Australia again for another solo exhibition (see 2010) at the Above Second Gallery. With paintings, sculptures, and wall murals infused with his urban aesthetic and comic-inspired imagery filling the showpace, fans who attended the opening for Journey is the Reward were certainly not disappointed. Throw in some work on the streets of the city-state and it was definitely another productive trip. More photos after the jump…

Preview: Meggs – “Journey is the Reward” @ Above Second

Australian painter Meggs, who we recently saw in Hawaii for the annual POW WOW art retreat, has moved on to his next project – a solo in Hong Kong. Opening this Friday, March 30th, at Above Second, his second show (see 2010) with the gallery is entitled Journey is the Reward and references a personal manifesto or philosophy of which is also tattooed across his chest. The words are a constant reminder that making art or being an artist, is a lifestyle, a passion, and life-long […]

Showing: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Next stop on our tour of Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 after leaving his Paris showing takes us to the Gagosian in Hong Kong. The most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists certainly has outdone himself with this current slate of exhibitions (at least in terms of scope and ambition). This lone display in Asia of his famous dotted motif is no different than the other eleven simultaneous shows planned – filled with paintings, spots, and canvases of different […]

Teaser: Damien Hirst – “Spot Paintings” @ The Gagosian (Worldwide)

Has anyone taken up Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Challenge? AM will be visiting and covering as many of the Gagosian openings for you as possible now that January 12th is here, but hopefully someone out there will be able to attend all eleven locations (New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong) at some point. “Included in the exhibition are more than 300 paintings, from the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; to the smallest spot painting comprising half […]

Roy Lichtenstein – “Landscapes in the Chinese Style” @ Gagosian Gallery (Hong Kong)

Our Hong Kong correspondent, Layla Kawashima, recently stopped by the Gagosian to take some photos of the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition before it closed. Landscapes in the Chinese Style consists of a collection of lesser known works from the famous pop artist that features his reinterpretation of traditional Chinese painting. He states: “I think (the Chinese landscapes) impress people with having somewhat the same kind of mystery (historical) Chinese paintings have, but in my mind it’s a sort of pseudo-contemplative or mechanical subtlety…I’m not seriously doing […]

Openings: “East West Connect” @ Above Second

Last Friday night, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted Arrested Motion’s first curatorial project, East West Connect, with a lineup that represented the diverse selection of art we love and cover for you every day. It was gratifying to see that art fans in HK appreciated this type of art as well, evidenced by the turnout and the fact that most pieces that sold so far have found homes with local collectors. We also enjoyed some interesting discussions with attendees on the idea and […]

Update: Faile for “East West Connect” @ Above Second

We’ll be sharing with you a preview of the entire exhibition soon, but here is one more look at one of the pieces from East West Connect, AM’s first curated show (hosted at Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong). For those astute Faile fans out there, you will recognize this image from part of the recent outdoor mural they created for the prominent Houston Bowery location in New York. This silkscreen on found book cover is part a triptych that will soon be revealed. Show […]
