Upcoming: José & Rey Parlá – “U.T.O.P.I.A.” @ colette

On September 3rd, the Parlá Brothers (José & Rey) will be presenting a new show in Paris at colette entitled U.T.O.P.I.A. The Brooklyn-based artists will be presenting a collaborative effort with José’s specialty being drawing and painting, while Rey is known for his photographs. It will be interesting to see how they plan to fuse their two artistic repertoires in this new body of work. Discuss José Parlá here.

The Water Tank Project (New York)

If Tom Fruin’s Watertower installation in Brooklyn is any indication, having artwork tower over art lovers in New York can make the cityscape a lot more interesting. Something that might do just that (as evidenced by these mock-up photos) is the proposed Water Tank Project, except instead of a new structure, existing water tanks (twelve feet high, thirteen feet in diameter) in NYC will be used as canvases for public art. As we mentioned back in March along with set of photos from JR (featured) taken during a trip to Cuba, the French photograffeur was prepping for the next phase of his The Wrinkles Of The City project. It looks like that project has been started already as a collaboration with Jose Parla in Havana as evidenced by a glimpse of the action in the pic above. Videos: Jose Parla – “The Concord Project”

Back in January, we shared with you a very special project in Toronto by urban calligrapher José Parlá at the Concord City Place. Now comes this video from inkblot media with some footage of the impressive large scale works in situ as well as in progress. Even more interesting is an interview with Parlá as he explains where he came from, his process, the the meanings behind the pieces for this commission, and just his passion for storytelling. The Standard Hotel just uploaded a new video taking a short behind-the-scenes look at the Jose Parla Character Gestures show (covered here & here) in Los Angeles last month.
