SDCC ’16: South Park 20th Anniversary Art Show

During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, adult animated sitcom South Park hosted a 20th anniversary art show as part of their South Park 20 experience. Curated by Ron English, many of the participants are of course known to readers of AM including Buff Monster, Anthony Ausgang, Sas Christian, RISK, Kenny Scharf, Faile, and more. Openings: “OUTSIDEIN” @ ArtCenter College of Design

Last week, OUTSIDEIN opened at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena with contributions from artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, RISK and Jeff Soto. The exhibition was dedicated to the art of graffiti-based mural painting and hence featured murals painted inside as well as outside by the participants. Previews: “OUTSIDEIN” @ ArtCenter College of Design

Thursday night, the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena will be opening OUTSIDEIN, an indoor and outdoor exhibition that is focused graffiti-based mural painting. Along with the wall painted by RISK that we showed you a few weeks back, artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, and Jeff Soto have also made contributions. Streets: Kenny Scharf (Malaga)

Taking part in the ongoing Maus Malaga 2015, street art legend Kenny Scharf just spent a few days on the Mediterranean, getting up some of his signature work. Working on the east side of the river Guadalmedina, the LA-based artist added his work to a local wall of fame, along with Ben Eine, Felipe Pantone, Javi Calleja, under the massive murals by D*Face and Shepard Fairey. Releases: Kenny Scharf x The Hundreds

The Hundreds recently unveiled their collaboration with Kenny Scharf (interviewed) on a new line of apparel. Taking the legendary New York street artist’s Hanna Barbera inspired cartoon imagery, deployed in a repeating camouflage pattern, the new collection is a camping-inspired series which includes a poncho that converts into a tent. Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Born Again” @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Over the weekend, Honor Fraser Gallery in Culver City presented new works from Kenny Scharf (interviewed) collectively entitled Born Again. The latest solo from the American painter includes a diverse sampling of his oeuvre including new pieces on reclaimed artwork, assemblages, videos and collages, as well as an installation. Showing: “Appropriate Disruption” @ Jacob Lewis Gallery

On November 21, Appropriate Disruption opened at Jacob Lewis Gallery in New York. The show revolves around a theme of appropriation and features the intricate works of Rina Banerjee, Reza Farkhondeh, the always incredible How and Nosm, Austin Lee, Erik Parker, Emilio Perez and the infamous, Kenny Scharf (seen above). The works will be on view until Saturday, December 20 so if you hurry, you can still catch it.

Recap: Kenny Scharf @ Pace Prints

Pace Prints recently unveiled an exhibition of fresh works by New York legend Kenny Scharf. The self-titled show consisted of unique silkscreen prints on which his signature cartoon-like faces were depicted three-dimensionally from painted and sculpted paper pulp. This new technique brings to life another aspect of his classic characters, who already exhibit vivid colors and wild emotions.
