Outside Lands 2013

Like previous years (see 2012 Dabs Myla / Skinner), Juxtapoz was asked to curate the visual art for Outside Lands in San Francisco. The annual major music and art festival in the Bay Area opened this weekend with attendees enjoying the installations, murals, and other associated projects from artists like Camille Rose Garcia (above), Mike Shine, Sam Flores, Dennis McNett, Skinner, and more. Tomorrow night at CHG Circa, fans can attend the opening of Luke Chueh’s (featured) newest show in Culver City. Fans of the incomparable James Jean (interviewed) probably have noticed that he has been on a sabbatical recently. But, the good news is there have been signs of life recently. Along with the release of his iBook, and the revival of his Instagram (including a cool animation), he also recently shared a new tumblr site showcasing new and old works. Preview: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday night (August 10th), Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. Bringing his robots into the city, where his other favorite subject (donuts) are in much abundance will make for excellent material for his special form of portraiture. Utilizing a meme, First World Problems, as the title, the new work will no doubt add an extra layer of meaning when robot society is involved. Upcoming: Amy Sol @ CHG Circa

Besides her recent print releases, Amy Sol (interviewed) has also been busy working on her new solo. Coming up on September 14th at CHG Circa, the showing will see the Las Vegas-based painter reveal the next chapter in the story of her heroine and animal friends. It’s been a little over a year since she showed at the Culver City sister gallery (covered), so fans will be ready to see where Sol’s magical imagery is headed for next. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Release: Nathan Ota – “Ikiru”

It looks like Nathan Ota’s new book Ikiru is up for preorder now from ZERO+ Publishing. The 144 page hardcover covers the LA-based artist’s work from his early street art to illustrations and gallery pieces to recent collaborations with the street artist RISK. Upcoming: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Robot and donut enthusiast Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at Corey Helford Gallery on August 10th, his fifth with the Culver City showspace. Unlike his last show (covered) which featured his old school mechanical characters in the natural setting, the new paintings depict them in the city along with their dependable fried dessert friends. Rife with irony, First World Problems will see his robots dealing with the “struggles” of urban coexistence. Discuss Eric Joyner here.

On Thursday night (August 1st), Roq La Rue will be hosting all new works from painter Tran Nguyen (alongside Jason “Ti Kunkit” Wheatley).
