Upcoming: Gary Baseman – “Happy Toby To You” @ Time Square Hong Kong

On May 21st, Hong Kong’s Time Square will be welcoming in another artist (see Mike Stilkey and Yoskay Yamamoto) to create an installation arranged by LeBasse Projects at the mall complex in Causeway Bay. In celebration of his character Toby’s 10th birthday, Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) faithful companion will be part of a new sculptural installation set up as a birthday party with his dear friends. Tonight in Seattle (May 7th), Travis Louie (interviewed) will be revisiting Roq La Rue for another showing of his vintage photography inspired paintings of imaginary creatures, created in a style self-described as a kind of “cryptozoology.” Entitled Archive of Lost Species, the fresh new pieces are a collection of fantastical characters, unique in their size and circumstance, many posing next to their human counterparts. Last week, the fifth edition of Art Market San Francisco welcomed a record 25,000 visitors to Fort Mason Festival Pavilion over the five days it was open to the public. A wide range of works were on display at premier contemporary and modern art fair in the Bay Area including works from Kevin Earl Taylor (seen above) as well as many familiar and new names to our readers. James Jean: Xenograph Preorder & Fundraiser

James Jean (interviewed) recently announced the preorder for his next book entitled Xenograph. Documenting his work from 2010 to 2014, the monograph will pick up where REBUS left off and also features images of his exquisite pen and ink drawings from his sketchbook. Funds raised for the first printing will go toward the cost of self-publishing for the first time, giving Jean more control over the process. A return to our Art Focus features see our eyes settle on the work of Cinta Vidal. The Spanish artist who works in scenography, mainly paints the massive backdrops at Opera de Sabadell with here time, but it is her personal art or “un-gravity constructions” that interests us. The impossible architecture oftentimes has a Escher-like feel to it, and when combined with everyday objects and people going about their everyday life makes for an interesting dynamic that has the viewer examining the pieces from different angles and perspectives. In celebration of Newcastle’s Late Shows, Candice Tripp (interviewed) will be holding a one night only show at Baltic 39 on May 12th. Based on an extension of the open studio platform, the locally based artist will be exhibiting the work that she creates between shows that often doesn’t see the light of day. After stopping by to check in on the progress of the joint mural between Jeff Soto (interviewed) and Maxx242 in Riverside, we dropped by a couple days ago to see the finished two-wall piece. The long time friends, collaborators (see Berlin & Luxembourg), and artists who have spent most of their lives in the area hope that this new mural will be the beginning of a new renaissance for public art in this part of Southern California.
