Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden Preview

Another reason to hit up the major art fairs is the opportunities to see the new gems from Mark Ryden in person. For this year’s Miami rendition of Art Basel, the lowbrow painter will be bringing at least two originals with him to the party – Main Street USA (seen above) for the Michael Kohn booth (Booth K10) and Pinxit Jajo (seen after the jump) for the Paul Kasmin booth (Booth B14).

Another show to check out while in Miami for this year’s Art Basel Week is a new solo from COPE2, who we recently saw in New York & Amsterdam. Still on a prolific pace, the wildstyle legend from the Bronx will be bringing a new body of work entitled Rise to the Occasion to the Wynwood Arts District (167 NW25th Street) for a show opening on December 1st and running to the 4th. ABOVE (interviewed), whose giveaway on AM of his new PASSPORT book we just announced yesterday, is currently in Miami preparing for his upcoming show with White Walls at the SCOPE fair next month. As you saw briefly in our recent update on the street festivities down in Miami, the Bay area-based ABOVE (interviewed) worked on a piece painted with his signature letters spelling out “GIVE A WALL ST. BANKER ENOUGH ROPE AND HE WILL HANG HIMSELF.” The mural, which also featured a man in a suit hanged in effigy along with the prolific street artist’s well known arrows, drew much attention and was featured on the local news. This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. It looks like Wynwood Walls is kicking off things early this year because just after RETNA hit up his wall in Miami, ROA, Gaia, Nunca, HOW & NOSM, the Date Farmers, Faile, and Bast rolled into town to do their thing. Undoubtedly, this year’s event will be just as looked forward to as last year’s edition, with a nice list of artists worked up already. Washington DC-based artist Mark Jenkins, whose work we enjoyed back in March at the VOLTA fair during Armory Week, recently got involved with the Beck’s Green Box Project, an interesting application of new technology in the streets.
