Basel Week Miami ’14: Wunderkammern @ SCOPE

With Basel Week Miami in the rear view mirror, AM will now take time to highlight some of the individual artists and booths that caught our attention. One particular gallery’s offerings that we quite enjoyed at SCOPE (covered) was from Rome’s Wunderkarmmern, especially Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) clever sculptural work (seen above). On display were also Aakash Nihalani’s geometric musings and Dan Witz’s street based pieces. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Mark Jenkins here. Discuss Aakash Nihalani here. Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Nychos

Nychos was another street artist that made his mark during this year’s Basel Week Miami with multiple murals. This particular project on the facade of the Miami Ad School in the Wynwood features two flamingos in the Austrian artists’ s usual dissected style, a welcome addition to the neighborhood with this long necked species being one of the most recognizable in the state. Lucky students will now be able to enjoy this new mural from The Weird Crew member along with other artists who have painted on the pink walls of their […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Rubell Collection – Six Solo Commissioned Exhibitions

The Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation is probably the most popular and well-known of the private collections in Miami. It is also one of the best and most in-depth, having been put together by Don and Mera Rubell over the course of 50 years. Opening on occasion of this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach edition, the Foundation’s first floor contains six commissioned solo exhibitions by the following artists: Will Boone, Aaron Curry, Lucy Dodd, Mark Flood, David Ostrowski, and Kaari Upson. Each artist visited the […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Openings: Art Basel (Part II)

After providing readers with our first set of images from the Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 fair, we provide you with a second and final glimpse of what was in store for visitors of the prestigious “main event” during Miami fair week. Highlights included Amanda Ross-Ho and Brent Wadden’s impressive work (featured above) at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, Jamian Juliano-Villani and Van Hanos at Tanya Leighton, Michele Ables at 47 Canal, and Julia Wachtel at Elizabeth Dee. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: The London Police

While attending this year’s Basel Week Miami, we also walked by a new mural painted by The London Police in the Wynwood district. The crisp linework and iconic LADS characters instantly marked the piece as painted by the famous duo and is a welcome addition to this hotbed of street art activity in Miami. Take a look at more detailed shots of the wall in the photos below… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss The London Police here.

Basel Week Miami ’14: de la Cruz Collection – “Beneath the Surface”

One of the best privately-owned collections in Miami is the de la Cruz Collection, which exhibits pieces from the collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz. During this year’s Basel Week Miami, it featured the Beneath the Surface show, which mainly included works by major American artists that have received attention during the past ten years. Among them were Joe Bradley, Dana Schutz, Tauba Auerbach, Kelley Walker, Wade Guyton, Seth Price, Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, Alex Israel, Rob Pruitt, and more. Each respective artist was […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Faith47 x Alexis Diaz

Another wall that caught our eyes while around Wynwood Walls during Basel Week Miami was a joint effort from Faith47 and Alexis Diaz, a continuation of the The Art of Collaboration program this year (also see Shep x Cleon Peterson). The mural was stunning in person, mixing South Africa-based Faith47’s female portraiture entwined with the darker illustrative style of the Puerto Rican Diaz. Here are some shots of him putting the finishing touches on the piece as well as a look at the entire image. Full image of the wall via […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: NADA

In Miami, the second must-visit fair right behind the Art Basel Miami Beach fair every year is NADA Miami Beach. Focusing on younger galleries and artists, NADA typically contains more surprising finds and new discoveries. Located in the historic Deauville Beach Resort, it included 36 exhibitors this year. Works ranged from art stars such as Israel Lund, Mary Weatherford, and Jon Rafman, to newer ones, such as Darja Bajagić, Mike Bouchet, and Peter Sutherland. Pictured above: solo presentation by Brian Kokoska at East Hampton Shed’s […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Barry McGee Signing @ NADA Beats Booth

While visiting the NADA fair (more on that later), we stopped to take a look at the signing session at a special booth from Barry McGee for fans that purchased his limited edition Beats Pill. Created in conjunction with Beats By Dre, the product looks great with one of the Bay Area-based artist’s signature characters on the side. More photos can be seen below… Discuss Barry McGee here.
