Previews: Nick Walker @ Quin Arts

On January 21st (6-9pm), Nick Walker (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at the Quin Hotel in New York. As the hotel’s inaugural artist-in-residence, the British artist already has 15 original pieces for display in their permanent collection. The newest body of work will be sure to put his stencil skills on display as well as bring us along some further adventures with his iconic Vandal. Discuss Nick Walker here.

Tomorrow night (January 7th) at the Joshua Liner Gallery, a joint exhibition from Sam Friedman & Josh Sperling will open its doors to the public. Friedman will be be presenting his abstractions inspired by the natural world, continuing his series of grayscale works which we quite like, along with introducing some more hued paintings. Tomorrow night (January 7th) in New York, the Klein Sun will be hosting a new solo in their south gallery from Li Hongbo entitled Textbooks. The new body of work from the Beijing-based artist builds on his previous exhibition there (see 2014) with a new immersive installation built from binder clips, textbooks, and classroom materials. This Saturday night (January 9th), Interesni Kazki (interviewed) will be opening their solo show at the 529 West 20th Street location of Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Sacred Gravitation, the new body of work will feature both paintings and drawings from the Ukrainian duo that highlight their mystical and Dali-esque imagery, something that makes their street murals distinctive and unique. Streets: Isaac Cordal (New York)

Last month, Isaac Cordal was invited to participate in the Residency at Vyt (Art Students League of New York) for a month. While there, the Spanish artist continued his series of Cement Eclipses works by creating more sculptures for placement on the streets. Scattered around New York City, the urban interventions are metaphors that reflect on politics, bureaucracy, and power – something to think about during the holidays. Discuss Isaac Cordal here.

A couple weeks ago, the 297 Tenth Avenue location of Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception for Undertow, Erik Parker’s new solo show. Drawing from a wide range of influences, the locally-based artist arranges these elements into complex compositions that become greater than the sum of its parts. The highly saturated palette as well as shaped canvases further accent his imagery, a commentary on the “world’s current political, social, and economic landscapes.” Discuss Erik Parker here.

Last week, the Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location) unveiled a new solo from Mark Ryden featuring his first-ever bronze sculpture, eight new paintings, drawings, color studies, and a new porcelain edition. As he mentioned in our recent interview, the theme of his exhibition could be described as “the soul confronting its physical form,” with the Dodecahedron symbolizing a bridge between the physical world and the intangible realm. Tonight at the 297 Tenth Avenue location of Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, Erik Parker’s exhibition entitled Undertow will be open its doors to the public. For his third solo with the Chelsea showspace, the locally based artist has prepared works rendered with a highly saturated palette that continue to explore the world’s current political, social, and economic landscapes. As you can see from the preview images below, he will also be introducing some shaped canvases that add an extra narrative to his imagery.
