Openings: Yayoi Kusama Retrospective @ The Whitney Museum

A couple nights ago, AM was able to stop by the Whitney Museum in New York to attend the opening of the Yayoi Kusama solo exhibition. The traveling retrospective, which was recently shown at the Tate Modern in London (covered), features a diverse selection of her work from the 1940s through the present including traditional Japanese paintings, her canvases utilizing repeating motifs of dots and nets, furniture bristling with soft-sculpture phalluses, her polka-dot-painted pumpkins, whole room light installations, and more. The Los Angeles-based and MSK-affiliated RIME recently made the trip out to New York for this standout wall including the names of Smart Crew members DCEVE and TOPER. As evidenced by his other moniker “Jersey Joe”, RIME has roots and experience getting up in the area which he used to full advantage with this rooftop collaboration or tribute. This past weekend, New York’s Cotton Candy Machine hosted their second annual “tiny” art showcase entitled Tiny Trifecta. As we mentioned in our preview, artists this year upped the ante as each created three pieces of original artwork for fans who may not have the opportunity to purchase their larger scale works. This Saturday, New York’s Cotton Candy Machine will be holding its second annual “tiny” art show. Entitled Tiny Trifecta, this year’s edition looks to take it up a notch as each artist creates three pieces of original artwork costing only $100 each. We stopped by the gallery to sneak a peek and noticed that this year, artists aren’t just submitting simple “tiny” sketches. The Water Tank Project (New York)

If Tom Fruin’s Watertower installation in Brooklyn is any indication, having artwork tower over art lovers in New York can make the cityscape a lot more interesting. Something that might do just that (as evidenced by these mock-up photos) is the proposed Water Tank Project, except instead of a new structure, existing water tanks (twelve feet high, thirteen feet in diameter) in NYC will be used as canvases for public art. Openings: Shawn Barber – “Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week in New York, the Joshua Liner Gallery played host to artist and tattoo specialist Shawn Barber’s (interviewed) new solo – Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series. The new body of work features portraits of notables in the body inking subculture (many of them the painter’s close friends) as well works featuring various selections of tattoo paraphernalia. Streets: David Ellis – “PST” (New York)

Versatile artist David Ellis recently turned the Pearl Street Triangle, a pedestrian plaza in Brooklyn, into a canvas for his a new mural. Entitled simply PST, the new piece which took six days to complete depicts an artist being held up by two large hands. The project funded by DUMBO developer Two Trees Management is a reference to the Ground Zero space filled with water while the uplifting hands show that we can pull ourselves up. Earlier this month, Arcadia Fine Arts in New York hosted a new wave of representational painters who are challenging tradition in a group exhibition entitled Sur-Realism. Included in the lineup were Rick Berry, Ryan Bradley, John Brosio (above), Nancy Depew, Brian Despain, Craig Elliot, Shown Fields, Danny Galieote, Andrew Hem, Damon Lehrer, Adam Miller, Billy Norrby, Michael Rosenfeld, Laura Sanders, Linnea Strid, Eric White, Aron Wiesenfeld, and Martin Wittfooth. Streets: Lewy Bombs the Brooklyn Bridge

Earlier this week, Lewy added his name to the short list of legends who have hit up the Brooklyn Bridge with their graf skills. The tags were buffed over quickly but not before photos were taken of the first work on the spot in over a decade. The fill-ins were put up in the cover of darkness 119 feet up and were repeated three times by the daring and prolific artist. Via 12OzProphet.
