Openings: Dan Witz – “Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Brett Amory’s solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was also Dan Witz’s Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise. This show featured the Brooklyn-based artist and his hyper-realistic painting style where he applies old master techniques to create incredibly vibrant and detailed works. We saw his signature large-scale oil paintings which feature Witz’s crazy and energy packed mosh pits as well as some works from his illuminated series. AM caught the opening featuring Hikari Shimoda when the Japanese artist exhibited at New York’s Foley Gallery. The show Me, as in the Beast Coat was a intriguing series or paintings that explored the complex themes of adolescence and how young adults strive to cope with the reality of growing into their situation. Openings: Aaron Young – “Built Tough” @ Bortolami Gallery

AM recently caught Aaron Young’s New York Solo Built Tough at Bortolami Gallery. The show was a departure from the motorcycle etchings we typically see by Young as he tackled the motif of America and its symbols with new body of works that included sculptures, paintings, and silkscreens. Teaser: Ron English Custom Dunny Painting @ Kidrobot (New York)

This Thursday, July 14th (6-8pm), Ron English (featured) will be at the Kidrobot in New York to do some live painting. However, the “canvas” will be a four foot dunny of which the pop artist should have no difficulty with dispite its uneven surface. Ron was just in London for his Lazarides show (covered), so this will be a chance for NYC fans to get reacquainted. Discuss Ron English here.

AM recently attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (interviewed) latest NY solo Dark Light (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new series of paintings is a departure from Brett’s daytime series as the subjects are based in the still of night. However, Brett transitions his subjects and urban environments effortlessly into the emptiness of nocturnal darkness. Earlier this week, Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bolin continued his Hiding In New York series (previous location) on Greenwich Street at the the Tiles For America site dedicated to 9/11. We recently went by Muriel Guepin Gallery to check out French-born, Brooklyn-based artist Supakitch’s (featured) first major NYC exhibition, entitled Based on a True Story, which is up through the end of July. For the show, Supa presented mostly new paintings on canvas and works on handmade paper that featured his characteristic bold colors, fine line-work and music-inspired compositions. Last week we first showed you the pics of the prominent Bowery & Houston mural completed by French artist JR. The famed photographer utilized the simple but enlarged image of Native American “DJ 2 Bears”. Of course, no man is an island. JR called in the help from some friends involved in the (Sioux) Standing Rock Nation project in the Dakotas to help finish wheat pasting the location. We last caught up with Brett Amory (interviewed) while he was in London for his show at the Lazarides-run Outsiders Gallery in January. Time goes by quick as he’s already set to open his newest solo, Dark Light, at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery on June 30th. They recently posted up some photos of Brett getting ready for the big New York show that will give you some idea of what to expect.
