Openings: Stephanie Gutheil – “Kopftheater” @ Mike Weiss

Mike Weiss Gallery in Chlesea recently opened an interesting show by young German artist Stefanie Gutheil. The exhibition is entitled “Kopftheater”, which translates to “Theater of the mind” and is a fitting description of the strange and imaginative worlds portrayed in Gutheil’s paintings. The press release name-drops 15th and 16th-century Dutch painters Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel as influences, but we think that her creatures remind us a lot of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. NYT’s Art Critic Reviews Os Gemeos Mural

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a glowing review by esteemed art critic Roberta Smith of the recently completed mural by Os Gemeos (covered). Other than being mistaken about this being the twins’ first public artwork in Manhattan (first legal public artwork, perhaps), Smith gets everything else right, describing the stunning work in loving detail. It’s not everyday that the “Old Gray Lady” gives such accolades to street artists, so congrats to Os Gemeos. Well deserved. Discuss Os Gemeos here.

Opening: The Piece Process @ Anonymous

A spirited crowd came out last night for the opening of “The Piece Process” at Anonymous Gallery on New York’s Lower East Side. The concept: connect pop/urban/graffiti/street artists from the last fifty years through an exhibition of their sketches, studies and preliminary works. Openings: Shag and Calma @ Jonathan LeVine

Last night, AM was on hand at Jonathan LeVine for the preview of two great shows, Shag’s Voyeur (previewed/interviewed) and Stephan “Calma” Doitschinoff’s Novo Mundo. Shag’s work is nothing less than magnetic from the second one enters the gallery. Each painting is sharp and vibrant in its given color palette, and all the works together form a rainbow that shocks the viewer’s senses! (Think of a “mod” fiesta for the eyes.) NYC’s pre-Thanksgiving art feast

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and AMÂ is already in a festive (read: tongue-in-cheek) mood thinking about the bountiful meal that is the main attraction of the holiday. But even with our mind turning to delicious turkey and pie, we can’t resist the cornucopia of artistic delights being generously offered this November by the galleries of New York City. Kehinde Wiley @ Deitch Projects

Down, an exhibition of new paintings by Kehinde Wiley, opens this Saturday at Deitch Projects. The exhibition supposedly will consist of four large-scale paintings inspired by images of fallen warriors, saints and classical mythology. If you haven’t seen any of Wiley’s large works in person, you definitely need to come out for this show. You will be amazed. To see more examples of Wiley’s work, click here.

Eric Beltz @ Morgan Lehman

We’re not sure how we missed this… but AM recommends checking out Eric Beltz’s solo show, The Good Land, at Chelsea’s Morgan Lehman Gallery. Beltz creates intricately detailed graphite works on paper filled with allegorical images from American history. The show runs until November 8.

Wooster Collective Blek Le Rat special edition

Wooster Collective recently unveiled their forthcoming Wooster special edition with influential French stencil artist Blek Le Rat. Apparently, a few of the special edition book and print sets (limited to 300 copies) were available last weekend at the opening of the Blek Le Rat (and Doze Green) show at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Look for the rest of the edition to drop on the Wooster Collective site sometime soon.

Preview: Aya Uekawa @ Kravets/Wehby

New York-based Japanese artist Aya Uekawa opens her latest show tonight at Chelsea’s Kravets Wehby, entitled It’s a Really Small World. What Uekawa can do with pattern and composition is truly amazing, making it no wonder that so many collectors are keeping a close eye on her career. The show is up until December 6, 2008.
