Having exhibited in Beijing, New York and LA (covered here), contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Huan opened his first UK solo show at Pace Gallery. Running until May 31, Spring Poppy Fields features fourteen new oil on linen paintings inspired by the artist’s travels to Buddhist sites in Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and India, between 2011 and 2014. Using a pointillist technique, his colorful and psychedelic paintings provide the viewer with some optical illusions. During Frieze Week, Pace Gallery held the much anticipated opening for Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. The solo exhibition is Nara’s first with the blue chip gallery since joining its esteemed roster in 2011. Several months ago at the ADAA Art Show, we caught some new work from Yoshitomo Nara as he made his solo fair debut with Pace Gallery. The entire booth was filed with a variety of Nara’s signature works on paper. In anticipation for this year’s Art Hong Kong, we bring you a special studio visit to Pace Print’s Manhattan studios. For the fair opening on the 17th, Pace will be unveiling a special edition woodcut print created in collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Last Friday AM attended a preview of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) solo exhibition Harmony & Discord with blue chip gallery Pace Prints. As shared in our recent studio visit, this epic show was over a year in the making. Openings: John Chamberlain @ Pace Gallery

We recently went by Pace Gallery to see sculptor John Chamberlain’s 13th and final solo with the gallery (he recently left to become represented by Gagosian). Chamberlain has made his 50-year career by creating large-scale painted metal sculptures—typically out of car parts—which bring to mind three-dimensional abstract expressionist paintings. His current exhibition with Pace consists of more than a dozen such sculptures from the 1980s through the 2000s and is showing through July 1. Take a look at images from the show, after the jump.
