Frieze Art Fair ’13 : Highlights (London) – Part 1

Frieze Art Fair returns to London from 17 to 20 October 2013 showcasing 152 galleries from around the world. Previews: Laurent Chéhère – “Flying Houses” @ Muriel Guépin Gallery

For his first solo show in the US, Laurent Chéhère will be presenting his Flying Houses series at the Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York. Set to open on the first of November, the exhibition will introduce New Yorkers to the French photographer’s surreal floating structures and altered realities. Showing: Tim Barber – “Relations” @ Yuka Tsuruno Gallery

At the end of last month, photographer Tim Barber returned to Japan for a third solo show (see 2011) at Yuka Tsuruno Gallery. Openings: JR – “ACTIONS” @ Lazarides – Rathbone

After inviting Londoners to his Inside / Out photobooth truck (covered here), JR (interviewed) opened his solo exhibition ACTIONS at Lazarides Rathbone yesterday. The work on display includes ACTIONS that the French photographer and street artist has worked on around the world like his Wrinkles of the City in Berlin earlier this year, his journey to North Korea, and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation project. Openings: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Over the weekend, the Shulamit Gallery in Venice, California opened their doors to Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) Mythical Homeland. Dominating the showspace was a birch forest installation that had photographs, drawings, and paintings hung throughout which references the experiences the LA-based artist’s father went through as a freedom fighter hiding from the Nazis (also illustrated in a recent music video with Die Antwoord). Previews: Quam Odunsi – The Reagents @ Design Matters Gallery

Opening this Thursday, Oct 10, is Quam Odunsi’s second solo exhibition at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles. Streets: JR (London)

As we mentioned last month, JR (interviewed) is returning to London after five years with a two-part solo exhibition, ACTIONS, at Lazarides Rathbone and multiple sites across the capital. The Inside / Out photobooth truck showed up last week and Londoners’ black and white portraits were pasted alongside the Somerset House. The corner of Via Lambro and Via Melzo in Milan was packed with urban art lovers and skateboarders that wanted to meet and greet legendary Ed Templeton on the night of 19th of September. Upcoming / Streets: JR @ Contemporary Art Center (Cincinnati)

Along with a show coming up in London, French “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) also will be opening a solo museum exhibition soon at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. The show officially opens on September 21 (more details on the schedule and associated activities here) and will feature wheatpasted images, photography, video projections, sculpture, as well as the famous mobile phone booth which has been spreading the street artist’s Inside Out love.
