Videos: Pow Wow Hawaii 2012 (Part 1)

It feels like only yesterday when we finished up the phenomenal gathering of street artists known as POW WOW. Expanding both the presence inside and out, this year’s event took a giant leap to expand upon its premiere last year in Hawaii. Check out a slick look put together by Banzai Media at the outdoor works by a slew of international artists as they visually transformed the industrial neighborhood of Kaka’ako to psych you up for 2013!

POW WOW ’12 / Streets: 123 Klan x Flying Fortress x Aaron De La Cruz x Slick

The ocean and the gnarly waves are some of the elements that are synonymous with the Hawaii islands and this year’s POW WOW made sure to make their mark on some water front property. The 123Klan, Slick, Flying Fortress and Aaron De La Cruz hit up the old derelict Fisherman’s Wharf with some marine-themed urban action to greet passerby’s. More photos after the jump…

POW WOW ‘ 12 / Streets: Will Barras x Meggs x Mr. Jago x Angry Woebots x Phibs x Peap Tar

Continuing our look on the streets of Hawaii, the impact of POW WOW and the artists brought in from around the world on the industrial district of Kaka’ako is undeniable. This time we look at the building that houses former UFC champion BJ Penn’s gym. Artists hailing from Australia (Meggs & Phibs), Britain (Will Barras & Mr. Jago) and New Zealand (Peap Tar) collaborated along side Hawaiian artist Angry Woebots to create an impressive piece. Check out a more detailed looks after the jump.

POW WOW ’12: Suitman

For this year’s POW WOW, we see the return of performance artist, Young Kim aka Suitman. The versatile man of many talents continued expanding his longstanding  suit-photography series which he also explored during last year’s Pow Wow. With all the portraits created from the attendees from the opening night a year ago, Suitman pasted up and hand-finished two site specific outdoor murals to be displayed in the neighborhood of Kaka’ako thus giving a “distinguished” face to the event’s name. Check out more after the jump.

Openings: POW WOW ’12 @ Loft In Space

Last night, after a week of painting murals throughout the city (more on this later), the artists of POW WOW got together for an opening party at Loft In Space. The art festival brought many quality street and graffiti artists to the island, the likes of which are not often seen in Hawaii. This fact combined with the inclusion of local talent brought out a huge crowd of art lovers and admirers to the gallery, and the surrounding areas as they walked to various walls around […]

POW WOW ‘ 12 / Streets: 123Klan x Slick x Flying Fortress

Across from Loft In Space, the neighboring wall was attacked by 123Klan, Slick, and Flying Fortress for some of the outdoor portion go POW WOW. Almost completed, the piece features elements specific to Hawaii like their love for shaved ice, volcanoes, and orchids to more serious topics like how Dole Pineapple has affected the indigenous people. Makes sure you make out to the opening tonight (6-10pm) to see the mural in person, but for now – more detailed shots after the jump…

Artists such as Will Barras, Mr. Jago, Prime, Flying Fortress, 123Klan, Meggs, Angry Woebots, Aaron De La Cruz and many more took tours of the neighborhood to […]
