On May 6th, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be hosting a group show curated by Kirsten Anderson (owner of the recently closed Roq La Rue). One of her ongoing series of shows, Lush Life, will be brought to life again with contributions from Lauren Levato Coyne, Peter Ferguson, Laurie Hogin (seen above), Jeff Jacobson, Redd Walitzki, John Brophy, Tyler Thrasher, Travis Louie, and Laurie Lee Brom. Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). From candlelit backrooms to small forest clearings, Incantation sees Roq la Rue Conjuring up a group show based on ritual and mysticism. Occultism is often seen as heretical to mainstream society, but the beliefs and practices are centuries old and firmly rooted in nature and our surroundings. Redd Walitzki didn’t have to go to far for her first solo show at Roq la Rue as her studio is mere blocks away from the gallery. When We Break intertwines seemingly vulnerable subjects with nature and small animals, as flowers erupt from the skin and melt into the milky backgrounds. Some manage to fly out of the panel itself. Infusion at Roq la Rue opened on Thursday, March 6th to a packed audience. The show’s goal was to infuse the gallery with talent that had not been seen in the gallery previously. Almost all of the artists in the show are new to the gallery and they didn’t take the opportunity lightly.
