Earlier this month, Quint Gallery in La Jolla opened a new show from Kelsey Brookes (featured), continuing their support for the locally-based artist that has spanned over a decade (see 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018). Entitled PERCEPTION & HALLUCINATION, the exhibition focuses on his Veil and Form Constants series of works. The first represent insights gleaned from Brookes’ experiences with Insight Meditation and the questions about his existence that arose, while the second are based on four basic patterns of visual perception – tunnels, spirals, lattices and cobwebs – that were observed by users of […]

Last weekend, north San Diego saw the opening of YESNIK’s latest solo show at the LUX Art Institute in Encinitas. On view through the end of March, the museum exhibition features paintings, sculpture, and murals where the locally-based artist reimagines the textures, colors, and shapes of the natural world into abstract totemic compositions. The work is a continuation of his recent direction where he explores “societal fragmentation through the invention of figures made of vibrant colors and flat shapes, taking on dimensionality as they teeter in […]
On view through November 10th at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, Kelsey Brookes’ new show sees him take his work in a more dimensional direction. Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries continues the locally-based artist’s longstanding practice of looking to nature and science for inspiration. The painted freestanding and wall sculptures deal with viruses and the Fibonacci sequence, and feature Brookes’ signature psychedelic and colorful patterns. Check out the video below for further explanation if you are interested… Discuss Kelsey Brookes here.
On September 28th, Quint Gallery in La Jolla will be opening a show from Kelsey Brookes entitled Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries. Continuing to draw from his scientific background as former biochemist for inspiration, the locally-used artist has found a novel way to present his geometric and patterned imagery by applying them to sculptural surfaces. Working in particular with the Fibonacci sequence and viral structures with this new body of work, these psychedelic wall mounted and free standing sculptures from Brookes have been in the works for most of this year. Psychedelic Space is the soon to be released book from Kelsey Brookes from Gingko Press that explores his last three years of work. The 216 page hardcover documents his more recent paintings, spanning four solo shows, the explosive patterns that are his artistic vision of molecular structures of the psychedelic nature. The monograph has some interesting additions like “gatefold spreads, a sticker sheet, and a clear molecular overlay on his stunning “LSD” piece, along with a booklet bound within and glow-in-the-dark cover text.” To mark this […]
The hardworking people from the PangeaSeed project are continuing their praiseworthy efforts with another successful edition of their Sea Walls: Murals for Ocean events. After an event in Mexico back in August (covered), they recently finished out their San Diego edition. For this leg of the project, they’ve collaborated with eight international artists and painted murals in the East Village district of San Diego, California. As always, the idea behind this project is “to help bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe via […]
