While wandering around Chelsea, we happened upon “The Birthday Party,” a fun show at ClampArt by New York-based artist Scott Daniel Ellison. We were not familiar with Ellison’s work but were immediately intrigued by the groupings of small illustrative paintings – dark yet humorous – with a painting style reminiscent of Marcel Dzama’s earlier painting style, but perhaps more expressionistic.
