Openings: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

Last weekend, an expansive collection of paintings, sculptures, and site-specific installations was revealed at BEYOND THE STREETS in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St). Showing: PichiAvo – “Versus” @ Underdogs Gallery

While in town completing a stunning new mural on the streets of Lisbon (covered), PichiAvo also had a show open at Underdogs Gallery. Entitled Versus, the new exhibition from the Spanish duo features paintings, drawings, and sculptures that form a cohesive body of work showcasing their signature combination of classical art and elements of graffiti culture. Previews: Chris Konecki – “Head On A Swivel” @ 111 Minna

Tonight (May 4th) in San Francisco, Chris Konecki will be opening a new show alongside Sam Flores (covered) at 111 Minna. Head On A Swivel features Konecki’s assemblages of found and repurposed objects, mirroring the imagery found in his street murals. The gritty sculptural pieces are constructed dilapidated structures, boarded up windows, graffiti, barbed wire, fencing, and other elements of urban decay. Frieze Week NYC ’18: First Look

With the Frieze Art Fair opening in New York this week, AM made the trek out to Randall’s Island to see what the contemporary art world had to offer. Featuring 190 galleries from 30 countries and a new layout, the event certainly had something for all art lovers out there, no matter their taste. Releases: KAWS – “Pinnochio” Wood Sculptural Edition

This morning, KAWS announced the surprise release of a PINNOCHIO wood sculptural edition on his IG. Produced in a run of 100, this signed and numbered iteration of the famous puppet, remixed with the Brooklyn-based signature aesthetic, is a wood version of his previously released vinyl figure. This collaboration with Disney, made by Karimoku and Medicom Toy, is sure to be a hit with his fans seeing releases are rare in this medium. Upcoming: Daniel Arsham – “Character Study” @ Morán Morán Gallery

Tonight in Los Angeles, Morán Morán Gallery will be opening a solo show from Daniel Arsham entitled Character Study. The title likely references the first part of the New York-based artist’s new body of work, the large scale recreations of his childhood collection of cartoon character patches that adorned his backpack. Created with plaster and in white, as is the formerly color-blind artist’s practice, the pieces which amazingly look to have the texture of cloth, are dusted with pigment chiaroscuro style. Ahead of the May 7th reveal of his upcoming SEEING/WATCHING permanent art installation (seen in below) curated by AllRightsReserved at Changsha International Finance Square in China, KAWS will be releasing an assortment of associated merchandise. Showing: Michael Lau – “COLLECT THEM ALL!” @ Christie’s (Hong Kong)

Earlier this week, Christie’s in Hong Kong put on display a selling exhibition from Michael Lau entitled COLLECT THEM ALL! Featuring the Chinese artist’s figurative work, whether that be in a painting or whether that be in sculptural form, they all feature the signature aesthetic that has come to be associated with what many consider to be the pioneer in popularizing the art toy or vinyl figure.
