NuArt ’15 / Streets: First Look

AM has arrived in Stavanger on Norway’s western coast to experience firsthand the city’s annual celebration of street art that is the NuArt Festival. Despite the jet-lag, we hit the streets to get a first look at some of the murals that have already been completed and others that are still in process. It didn’t take long to find some amazing street pieces. Close by the hotel (and actually on the hotel), we located two by Norway’s own Martin Whatson, each combining detailed black and […]

Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Over the weekend, the Library Street Collective hosted the opening for a new show from Cleon Peterson in Detroit. Poison features new paintings featuring nightmarish scenes of violence and gore, nothing new to fans of the former assistant to Shepard Fairey. What is new though are the sculptural editions that Peterson has included in the new body of work, a natural next step to bringing his provocative imagery to life. Photo credit: Sal Rodriguez. Previews: Jin Young Yu – “Myself / Them” @ Art Merge Lab

Coming up on September 19th, fans in Los Angeles will have a rare opportunity to see a selection of works from Jin Young Yu (interviewed) stateside at Art Merge Lab, a popup project in Downtown LA. Utilizing her signature technique of working with transparent plastic, the Korean artist creates life-size individuals (sometimes including their families and pets) while playing with ideas of identity and the tensions between our outward appearances and how we really feel inside. While this was the focus of her Me & Myself series of works, attendees […]

Openings: Banksy – “Dismaland” (Evening View)

If you’ve been following our visit to the UK to experience Banksy’s theme park Dismaland in the UK, you probably think you’ve see it all. But what’s a true to form artistic replica of Disney’s magic kingdom if it doesn’t work at night? Besides isn’t that when the magic is suppose to truly happen? Well, we stuck around to catch the “Bemusement Park” transform during the August 21st evening VIP session. Disappoint it did not as Banksy and company hit their mark to build a corporate playland, complete with a full drumming […]

Streets / Videos: Kwest Graffiti Sculpture For Roskilde Festival

Canadian graffiti artist Kwest, who we last saw collaborate with on mural with El Mac last year, was able to recently complete a project of his own. Heading to Denmark for the Roskilde Festival, his goal was to build the biggest graffiti letter sculpture he had ever attempted since he first started working in this medium in 1999. Working around his moniker, the letterform took form over many days and nights of hard work in a warehouse across from the festival and then transported over and […]

Studio Visits: Brendan Monroe – “Morphology” @ Heath Ceramics (San Francisco)

Last week, AM had the opportunity to visit Heath Ceramics in San Francisco where Brendan Monroe (interviewed) was hard at work in the upstairs workshop on an upcoming show. Opening September 25th in the ceramics studio and store’s Bay Area Boiler Room, Morphology will reveal months of work the Oakland-based artist has put in testing his limits with larger pieces, carefully choosing glazes, and bringing to life (in three dimensions) concepts and elements of his visual language. Judging from what we saw as well as his show at the Los Angeles Heath […]

Releases: Cleon Peterson Sculptural Editions

In association with his upcoming show in Detroit, Cleon Peterson has released a series of sculptural editions for fans who want to see his brutal imagery taken to the third dimension. The three offered sculpts come in an edition of ten in three different colorways (black, white, and gold), mirroring the palette of the provocative artist’s paintings. Ranging from $1500 – $2500, contact the  Library Street Collective if you are interested in adding one to your collection. Discuss this show here. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

First Look: Banksy – “Dismaland” @ Tropicana (Weston Super Mare – UK)

Banksy phenomenon once again showed it’s strength, influence and unpredictable nature when his largest project to date, Dismaland, opened doors for the press preview earlier today. Placed within the walls of a derelict lido site Tropicana in in Weston Super Mare, the show is built as a Bemusement Park for a family day out, but instead of sugar-coated fantasy land, it sends out a bit different message – sorry kids. Built in 1937 Tropicana was once the biggest outdoor pool in Europe and had the […]

Upcoming: Daniel Arsham – “Fictional Archeology” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

After installing a whimsical new installation in Washington DC with his Snarkitechture firm, Daniel Arsham has turned his attention to a more solo pursuit. Fictional Archeology sees the New York-based artist bring his signature technique of creating everyday objects as how they would appear if found by archeologists in the future to the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin on September 11th. Discuss Daniel Arsham here.

Showing: Revok – “Revok” @ Ruttkowski;68

With his most recent solo show titled Revok, Jason Williams aka REVOK introduced his latest concepts and works at Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany. Opened on August 14th, the show will stay on view until September 27th. The title of the shows refers to the concept of identity that he has been exploring since 1990, when he adopted the name as his alias. REVOK was only a tag or a pseudonym when he started out as a graffiti artist, but later on it became a frame within which he can define himself without social constraints. […]
