Showing through April of next year at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of Hello Kitty. Update: Brendan Monroe – “Blobography” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

Tomorrow night (November 1st) in Los Angeles, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be be ready to reveal all the hard work he has put in at Heath Ceramics. Blobography will feature some of the amazing organic sculptural forms he created in their workshop as well as some original paintings and drawings. The Oakland Museum of California is currently showing Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California, which is an exhibition focused on the “histories and social forces that changed the face of art in—and beyond—the Golden State.” The show includes early influnces by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in San Francisco in the 1930s, all the way to the vibrant new Mission scene from the 1990s through the present, including Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, and Amy Franceschini. Along with the launch of Frieze Art Week in London was the opening of the Frieze Sculpture Park, curated by Clare Lilley, Director of Programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Last week, just prior to the opening of the Frieze Art Fair in London, the Paul Stolper Gallery hosted the opening for a new solo from Damien Hirst. Consisting of sculptural works and screen prints of medical paraphernalia including medicine bottles, pharmaceutical boxes, ampoules, syringes, a scalpel, and drug packaging all blown up to larger scale, fans can see how this body of work entitled SCHIZOPHRENOGENESIS is an extension of his pill cabinet installations. Streets: Tom Fruin’s Stained Glass House @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

As a followup to his stained glass watchtower in 2012 (covered), Tom Fruin created a new installation last month at the Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Dumbo Arts Festival. Entitled Kolonihavehus, the house created from plexiglass was a hit with visitors during the day and at night, although it was particularly stunning lit up once the sun went down. Temporarily inhabited by duo CoreAct, attendees of the event were able to see the art structure enhanced by a collaborative physical performance. Via Colossal.

Openings: Wayne White – “Invisible Ruler” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On September 11th, AM attended the solo from Los Angeles-based artist Wayne White at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled Invisible Ruler, the new body of work includes his signature word paintings showing alongside a series on paper he created during a residency at the Rauschenberg Foundation. Completing the exhibition was a group of 15 foot kinetic sculptures, hand constructed from cardboard, highlighting his talents from a time back when he worked on production design for Pee-wee’s Playhouse from which he has won three Emmy Awards. Last week, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) opened a solo at the Hellion Gallery in Portland entitled Rainy Day with a Chance of Sun. After seeing some studio shots of some of the small originals and sculptural pieces he was working on, it was nice to finally visualize how the LA-based artist assembled and clustered them together.
