Openings: Shag – “Jungle Drums” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last week in Los Angeles, Shag (interviewed) brought a little retro chic to the new Corey Helford Gallery location with his latest solo entitled Jungle Drums. Along with his signature paintings featuring a nostalgic look back when mod characters hung out sipping martinis, the downtown LA showspace also featured tiki sculptures, a mid-century decor, as well as a large wall covered with his imagery. Upcoming: Shag – “Jungle Drums” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Openings: “Art Truancy – Celebrating 20 Years of Juxtapoz Magazine” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The year was 1994, Pulp Fiction was ruling the box office, The Beastie Boys were blasting Sabotage and a group of artists out in sunny California were brainstorming on how to start a Kustom Kulture magazine, that (unbeknownst to them) would eventually go on to be the most widely distributed and influential art magazine in the world. Famed painter Robert Williams (originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico) was riding a California wave, while collaborator, Fausto Vitello, was ripping with his Thrasher Magazine success, and with some key […]

Previews: SHAG – “Pink Elephants” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Later this month, November 23rd to be exact, the Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a new solo show from SHAG (interviewed). The fresh paintings play on the phrase Pink Elephants, first coined by Jack London in 1913 to describe the hallucinations experienced from excessive alcohol consumption. He recently had to cut himself off as he found that it was interfering with his work ethic. So in it’s place, he has continued to expanded on the imagery of his characters enjoying their drink, part of the hip […]
