Openings: Ludo – ‘The Chaos Theory’ @ Lazarides Rathbone

Following our recent studio visit, AM attended the opening for the solo exhibition of Ludo (interviewed) entitled The Chaos Theory at Lazarides Rathbone. Live butterflies were fluttering during the event in London, much to the delight of onlookers. Inspired by the theory of “The Butterfly Effect,” the French artist decided to focus on a more personal interpretation of his cultural inspirations with a selection of neon green and monochrome canvases. Last week, just prior to the opening of the Frieze Art Fair in London, the Paul Stolper Gallery hosted the opening for a new solo from Damien Hirst. Consisting of sculptural works and screen prints of medical paraphernalia including medicine bottles, pharmaceutical boxes, ampoules, syringes, a scalpel, and drug packaging all blown up to larger scale, fans can see how this body of work entitled SCHIZOPHRENOGENESIS is an extension of his pill cabinet installations. Showing: Dan Colen – “Miracle Paintings” @ Gagosian (New York)

Showing through this weekend at the 555 West 24th Street location of the Gagosian Gallery in New York is a solo from Dan Colen entitled Miracle Paintings. Openings: CT Nelson – “Thick With Instinct” @ Knew Conscious Gallery

AM was on hand at Knew Conscious for the October 11th opening of Thick With Instinct, the latest work from Denver artist CT Nelson. This is his third solo show in as many years at the gallery, and as with previous years, fans will note his signature raging fields of flowing lights and haunting imagery. One of the stars of the Denver art scene, his annual show always draws a big crowd of enthusiastic viewers. The show is on display now through November 7th.

Coming up in the middle of next month, CHG Circa will be presenting new works from Nate Frizzell (interviewed). Dark Was The Night will be his first solo with the gallery and the first in Los Angeles since the beginning of last year (covered). Over the weekend, painter Luke Chueh (featured) presented a new body of work to his collectors in Los Angeles entitled Self-ish. The show at CHG Circa featured a continuation of one of his most recognizable series, the “You Are What You Eat” works, overlaid with some of his self portrait elements. Also seen were further explorations of his “Head Space” pieces, autobiographical musings, as well as more of is “Color Field” paintings. With this latest edition of our Streets: World Roundup article, we turn our eyes to Las Vegas for our featured mural from ROA. The Belgium-based artist withstood the desert heat for four days of hard work before completing this piece with the image of a horny toad, a local species that can squirt blood out of its eyes to deter predators. For Tiffany Bozic’s third exhibition opening October 16th at Joshua Liner Gallery (see 2010 & 2012), she has produced a stunning new series of paintings artistically exploring how various species (including our own) perceive the world around them. Previews: Brendan Monroe – “Blobography” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

In another collaboration (see McFetridge here) that makes sense for both parties, Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles will be presenting a show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) early next month. Blobography will feature organic sculptural forms from the Bay Area-based artist, which have always been an extension of his science-influenced imagery. This Saturday (October 18), the Richard Heller Gallery all be hosting the second solo showing from Hideaki Kawashima in the United States (see 2011). Entitled Back And Forth, the new body of work includes portraits of boys and girls, familiar to those who saw his last show although presented in a simpler more raw form in this new exhibition.
