Just hours ago, Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo hosted the opening of KAWS‘ latest solo show entitled Ohh… The exhibition has been a long time coming for the NY-based artist’s fans and collectors in Japan, also home to his OriginalFake store. Opening alongside SABER (covered) a couple weeks ago was the New York-based artist Rostarr (featured). Premiering an entirely fresh body of work for his solo debut with the gallery, the Brooklyn native wowed the packed opening night crowd at the NY Opera Gallery. Currently showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery through May 4th is Thursday’s Girl from painter Josh Agle, otherwise known as SHAG (interviewed). For his fourth solo exhibition with the Chelsea showspace, the Socal-based painter presents a new body of work inspired by “All Tomorrow’s Parties, the classic Velvet Underground song in which lyrics written by Lou Reed spoke to New York’s downtown art scene found in places such as Warhol’s Factory.” The pieces reflect an aesthetic strongly influenced by mid-century modern design and are rendered in his distinctive style and palette. In preparation for their joint show opening on May 7th at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, JR and José Parlá worked on a mural together in Chelsea over the weekend. The piece is a followup to the epic series of walls they collaborated on in Cuba last year (covered) and will be the subject of their exhibition – The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba. Celebrating the 64th anniversary of French magazine Paris Match, in partnership with Opera Gallery in Paris, 19 artists paid tribute by revisiting some of their iconic covers in paintings, sculptures, photos and other mixed media.
