We recently stopped by the New Museum to check out their latest artistic installation in the main lobby. Entitled She’s Crafty, this holiday pop up project gives 13 female artists a few days to bring their talents to share with museum goers. Last week, the architect of LA “cholo” style graffiti and Art In The Streets alum, Chaz Bojorquez, opened up a show at the Plaza De La Raza / Boathouse Gallery. Entitled appropriately although now with hindsight misnamed End of the World, the exhibition which opened on December 21st featured Chicano artist’s signature script glorifying the strength and beauty of the East Los Angeles graffiti lettering styles. We’ve touched on the work of Kazuki Takamatsu before here on AM in a couple group shows, but seeing an entire series of works at the Gallery Tomura booth at SCOPE Miami (highlights here) really piqued our interest. The Japanese artist based in Sendai combines the use of computer imaging with traditional techniques to create eerie ghostlike characters through the medium of acrylic and gouache. After meeting up with DALeast & his wife and fellow street artist Faith47 during Basel Week Miami, we would be remiss to not mention his concurrent and current showing at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. POWDER of LIGHT ends this weekend at the New York showspace, but those that stop by will be rewarded by the Chinese-born, South Africa-based artist’s imagery created in his signature style of swirling vortexes of organic black lines. During our stroll through the seemingly endless array of booths and artwork during Art Basel in Miami, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the solo from the late Jiro Takamatsu at McCaffrey Fine Art. The influential Japanese artist was known as a writer, sculptor, painter and printmaker with this showing focusing in on his famous shadow pieces. After posting up the photos from Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo during this year’s SCOPE art fair in Miami, it’s now time to share the other artist featured in the Thinkspace booth – Brian Viveros.
