Basel Week Miami ’12: White Cube @ Art Basel

Already one of the biggest contemporary art galleries in London, White Cube now has the distinction of being Damien Hirst’s only representative gallery after the artist infamously left Gagosian Gallery. With an showing featuring artwork by Hirst, Tracey Emin, Zhang Huan, Christian Marclay, and emerging stud artist Theaster Gates, White Cube offered visual treats for any art lover visiting its Art Basel Miami Beach booth. Audrey Kawasaki x Hint Mint Party

Recently, the art-loving Hint Mint company threw a private party at their headquarters to celebrate the release of a set of designs by Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). Aside from checking out the original paintings that served as the imagery for the new series, other perks available to those in attendance. Each year at Art Basel Miami Beach, Team Gallery exhibits a collection of some of the most exciting young(er) artists at the fair with work that well represents each one’s respective practice. You can depend on Team to showcase Ryan McGinley, one of its biggest stars, with a couple of breathtaking works at their booth. Last week, Dave Kinsey unveiled a new body of work at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled Everything At Once, this large series is another step forward in the LA-based artist’s magnetic style of painting. While checking out the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we made sure to stop by the Joshua Liner booth to see what they had to offer. Featuring a diverse mix of work from artists on their roster, we were particularly enamored with a cluster of ESPO works, a new Ian Francis painting, and a new sound sculpture installation in the form of a chandelier from David Ellis and Roberto Carlos Lange. Bringing back one of their most popular shows for its 8th iteration, Giant Robot 2 recently opened its doors to the Post It 8 group exhibition. Collectors in Los Angeles lined up starting from early morning to take first dibs at works on post-it notes priced affordably at $25. Entering several at a time, each fan was allowed to purchase the pieces they wanted as long as they stuck to the one-per-artist rule. Hailing from Los Angeles and formerly of Seattle, Ambach & Rice’s booth at NADA (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami featured two mid-sized drawings by Eric Yahnker from his Long-Banged Lady series and a large-scale piece called The Good Samaritan. With a popular Jeff Koons exhibit at their Brussels gallery just recently coming to a close, Almine Rech arrived at Art Basel Miami Beach exhibiting a good mix of the young (Alex Israel, who also had a show at the gallery last month), established mid-career (Taryn Simon, Ugo Rondinone) and iconic (Ed Ruscha). Last month, we shared with you a video shot in-studio with KAWS before his Companion Balloon hit the streets of New York for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Then AM headed over in person to check out the pre-parade preparations before the 41-foot-high version of the NY-based artist’s shy signature character took to the air.
