Openings: “Grifters” Group Show @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

“Grifters,” a group show with a super lineup, opened last week at Lazarides – Rathbone Place. As expected, the artwork was fantastic and was placed well throughout the spacious gallery. And as an added bonus, some of the artists put up some pieces in the streets (like David Choe) to complement the show (more on this later). Take a look at all the images after the jump…

A show we teased you with last month is opening this Saturday night, the 12th, at Shooting Gallery. Amongst the many things we’ve seen over in Miami this year, perhaps the most talked about piece of work (certainly between the AM crew and our friends out here) was an previously unsold Barry McGee’s “99 bottle” installation over at Deitch Projects booth at Art Basel. Opening next weekend simultaneously are Femke Hiemstra’s “Hello Dachshund” and Junko Mizuno’s “Desert Woman.” Dutch artist Hiemstra’s creative use of found objects and fantastical narrative (animate inanimate objects frolicking with mischievous creatures in dark fairytale settings) has always drawn our attention and it will be nice to see a new body of work from her. Basel Week Miami ’09: Faile

AM went back to Basel today to check out a few more things, one of which was the recent work that Faile has been putting together for Perry Rubenstein (seen at recent group show). A wide range and scale of work was at the booth with the focus on the new wooden block wall pieces and also the more widely seen boxes. One of the highlights of our trip to Miami was definitely seeing this new Mark Ryden piece revealed at the Paul Kasmin Gallery booth at Art Basel. The breathtaking 72″ x 48″ piece “Incarnation” seems to be a happy medium between his new minimalistic style seen at his last solo at Tomio Koyama in Japan and his older imagery. Showing adjacent to the SCOPE, the Art Asia opened its doors to fair-goers exposing the Art Basel crowd to the special flavor of their region’s art. Featuring art from countries such as Korea, China, Japan, India, Cambodia, Thailand, and Taiwan, the work definitely brought some fresh ideas with its Asian flair. More images after the jump…
