Showing through last weekend, Ceci n’est pas un dessin, c’est une situation at Galerie Julien Cadet in Paris featured the instantly recognizable work of James Jarvis (interviewed). For an artist where drawing plays such a big role in his practice, the exhibition presented a further evolution of his work where his drawings were featured as the object – in flat sculptural form. JR Transforms Louvre Pyramid Creating Optical Illusion

Returning to the Louvre almost three years after his debut groundbreaking installation (covered), JR (interviewed) has created another large scale optical illusion centered on the museum’s iconic glass pyramid designed by I.M. Pei and completed in 1989. Devised in honor of the structure’s 30th anniversary, the piece titled The Secret of the Great Pyramid required the help of 400 volunteers pasting 2000 strips of paper in the main courtyard. Lasting only one weekend, the ephemeral installation from French artist was able to make the pyramid appear to extend […]

Showing: Tomoo Gokita – ‘Untitled’ @ Massimo De Carlo (London)

Over the last month, Massimo De Carlo Gallery has been hosting Tomoo Gokita‘s first London exhibition. In Gokita’s post-conceptual paintings, meaning is not so much ambiguous as it is deliberately absent. The focus is entirely on the aesthetic form and the only thing that matters is the acrylic gouache which clings to the surface of the canvas. The brushwork, which ranges from velvety soft to richly expressive, creates works which are arresting on a purely visual level. The trademark use of monochrome throughout his practice purposefully harnesses the […]

Showing: Alex Chinneck – “A sprinkle of night and a spoonful of light”

For this year’s Milan Design Week, Alex Chinneck has unveiled another one of his impossible architectural creations – sort of a followup to something he built last year in his native England (covered). Entitled A sprinkle of night and a spoonful of light, the new sculptural intervention that involves the front of an entire building is his most ambitious project to date. Produced in partnership with IQOS, the new seventeen meter wide piece unzips the side of the facade, leading to an illusion of the whole structure is coming apart. […]

Following a two week run at Cork Street Galleries, Migrate Art‘s Multicolour group show has now transferred to Phillips‘ exhibition space ahead of the works being auctioned on Thursday in aid of organizations working to help those affected by the ongoing global refugee crisis. The show brings together an impressive array of 31 artists including Turner Prize winners Anish Kapoor, Rachel Whiteread, Jeremy Deller, Mark Wallinger and Richard Deacon. The Calais Jungle encampment in northern France was at one point home to over 7,000 refugees and migrants. […]

Previews: Mark Whalen – “Ramble Ramble” @ Over The Influence (Los Angeles)

On April 13th, Over The Influence’s Los Angeles space will be hosting new sculptures and wall reliefs from the locally-based Mark Whalen (featured) with a show entitled Ramble Ramble. The Australian-born artist has been focusing on his three dimensional work of late, taking the heads of the gender-fluid figures from his paintings and stacking them in totemic multi-colored compositions. Created from cast aluminum, the intriguing pieces play with reality and feature different textures while appearing to balance with various balloon and air-filled objects. Discuss Mark Whalen here.

Openings: Austin Lee – “Feels Good” @ Deitch Projects (New York)

Currently in New York, Deitch Projects has a show on view from Austin Lee featuring a series of paintings and sculptures. Entitled Feels Good, the new work continues the locally-based artist’s practice of combining both digital (including VR) and traditional techniques to create luminous candy-colored paintings and distinctive distorted sculptures. The upper level of the SoHO space is dedicated to a selection of new portraits that he paints from life with an airbrush – of visitors to his studio during the past several years. As referenced by the title of the […]
