Tonight in Los Angeles, Morán Morán Gallery will be opening a solo show from Daniel Arsham entitled Character Study. The title likely references the first part of the New York-based artist’s new body of work, the large scale recreations of his childhood collection of cartoon character patches that adorned his backpack. Created with plaster and in white, as is the formerly color-blind artist’s practice, the pieces which amazingly look to have the texture of cloth, are dusted with pigment chiaroscuro style. Coming up on April 28th, Galerie Perrotin’s New York location will be hosting the opening of HEADS↔HEADS, the latest solo from Takashi Murakami. Spanning three floors of the space, the exhibition from the Japanese artist will include a new series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as Transcendent Attacking a Whirlwind, a 33 feet long piece adorned with gold and platinum leaf that is a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Streets: Sainer // The Crystal Ship (Belgium)

Earlier this month in Belgium, the third iteration of the The Crystal Ship art festival (also see 2016 & 2017) welcomed in an international roster of artists to create murals and art installations in the coastal city of Ostend. One of the standout walls comes from Sainer (featured) of the Etam Cru entitled Podkarpacie, a painterly piece which appears to be named after a province in Poland. Avery Singer’s Days of the Week (Computer Pain) is showing through the end of this week at the 439 W. 127th Street location of Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York. Basel Week HK’18 / Openings: James Jarvis – “The Waste Man” @ Aishonanzuka Gallery

On display through April 28th in Hong Kong at Aishonanzuka Gallery, The Waste Man is the latest exhibition from James Jarvis (interviewed). Known for his commercial work as a designer as well as a fine artist, his comics-style imagery (often humorous) is influenced by “philosophy, alternate realities, minimalism and skateboarding.” The show mainly consists of drawings of his signature character, something the British works on quite frequently, as well as a few larger gestural pieces on canvas. Over the weekend, the first set of visitors to the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival were treated to a majestic new installation from Edoardo Tresoldi. Entitled Etherea, the site specific piece for the event’s Arts Section is a continuation of the Italian artist’s work with wire sculptures, although this one is certainly his biggest artwork to date. The three transparent sculptures are inspired by Neoclassical and Baroque architecture, measuring 36, 54, and 72 feet in height. Discuss Edoardo Tresoldi here.

Featuring the Chinese artist’s figurative work, whether that be in a painting or whether that be in sculptural form, they all feature the signature aesthetic that has come to be associated with what many consider to be the pioneer in popularizing the art toy or vinyl figure.
